Okay, I’m addicted to this series. Like its predecessor, The Poisoned Nom de Plume delivers the same kind of headlong narrative rush I remember from stories I loved as a kid, but with a distinctly adult sensibility and humour. And what a relief to find a modern novel that presents sex as something enjoyable, even affectionate! After causing scandals all over Europe, our heroine arrives in Paris to conquer the capital and ends up settling into domestic bliss instead – for a time. But for Lola, ‘settling down’ still involves intrigue, chases on horseback, assassination attempts, literary jealousies, a duel at sunrise and some unforgettable sex. Lola is an engaging and endearingly flawed young heroine, full of bluster and vulnerability; as a Spanish noblewoman she’s a fraud, but she’s worked so hard to make the identity her own that I found I was rooting for her all the way. Lola can shoot, duel with swords, and by the end of the book is also a card sharp and high stakes gambler – the literary salons of Paris seem too small to hold her. With supporting roles for figures like George Sand, Franz Liszt and Alexandre Dumas, this is a historical novel that reads like a serial adventure and romance. Normally when I read historical fiction part of me is restless, wondering how close it is to the truth. But I think I’d prefer this version over the straight facts any day. (Janet E. About the Author
Kit Brennan is an award-winning playwright, who teaches writing and storytelling at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, and who has now successfully branched out into a new career as a novelist. With her husband, Andrew, she divides her time between Montreal and the quiet lake wilderness of Ontario, and maintains a disciplined writing regime each morning, revising the previous day's work and then progressing by a further five, or six, pages. In growing up her first interest was in becoming a ballet dancer, but that gave way to a love of horses and an ambition to be a jockey, followed by painting, children's book illustration, and finally acting, yet with writing always in the background somewhere. She worked for a number of years as an actor in the professional theatre before being asked to write a play for children to be performed on tour in elementary schools. This re-kindled her interest in writing and she moved on to become a professional playwright. One of the recurrent themes found in her work is gained from her interest in history, particularly Victorian, and personalities from that era are found in both her plays and novels. She meticulously researches the characters before placing them in a fictionalised setting with sometimes exaggerated adventures, which brings more life and interest to them than is usually possible in a straightforward biography. Her play, 'Tiger's Heart' explores the life of Dr. James Barry, who was actually a woman disguised as a man in order to be allowed to practice medicine in an age when this was not permitted, and the debut 'Whip Smart' series of novels is based on the real-life story of Lola Montez, a top notch, notorious bad girl of the Victorian era who was one of the most widely travelled women of her time.

another delightful romp through history!

Lola Montez is back, saucier than ever! Kit Brennan has given us another tale of derring-do and mayhem, spiced with plenty of lusty encounters and rib-tickling humor—and, I should warn you, genuinely tear-jerking moments as well. In the previous novel, Lola escaped from Spain with her life and a flamboyant new identity. This second novel follows her two years in Paris (1844-46) as she explodes onto the Parisian stage, falls in love, and is stalked by a mysterious killer. The reader is immersed in the vibrant society of the time, with its writers and composers, courtesans, frenzied gallops in the Bois de Boulogne, and reckless duels. Along the way, Brennan brings a fascinating cast of historical characters to life: Franz Liszt, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, and more. The real-life Lola was involved with them all! This tale will keep you turning pages right up to its gothic-horror climax—and then you’ll be begging for more, because Lola’s adventures don’t stop there. I’m looking forward to the next installment!

Lola Montez is back and in the middle of another adventure in the second book of the Whip Smart series. The beginning of this book totally caught me with the introduction of Franz Liszt and George Sand (two historical characters I am passing fond of). It was a fun romp through bedrooms and ballrooms. Scandal and intrigue happen and Lola finds herself in France. I felt that the story lagged here. Lola was vibrant as ever but it felt very much like a "same old, same old" kind of situation. She wants to be a dancer, doesn't quite cut it, falls in love with a handsome man, more intrigue, death, broken heart, a horse to remember him by. Just as I was feeling let down by this, the story ramps up with maniacs, graveyard fights, and Alexander Dumas finally seen in a better light.

It was a fun and fast read. We got to know her so well in the first book that her actions and choices are very familiar to us as readers. Even still, the story beyond her romances is captivating and worth every page.

The story of Lola and her spunky attitude and antics continue during the Victorian times. In this instance, we are taken to France. She has brushes with historical figures such as George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin. I find it a delight when little interactions and trivial details of such persons are described to enlighten us on their personality.

I was especially taken with one chapter which described a duel. The art of dueling, implications, and history were touched upon to peak the interest.

The main character's observations and comments on writing and being a writer were also topics that I took to heart.

Lots of good information here

Lots of good information here, although it might be considered a memoir as much as a guide. There are several chapters that really resonated with me, and gave me ideas of how to avoid just copying what works for others, in another place.

Disappointed

I'm a fan of Dark Tower Publishing, but not of this book. Some of the essays are interesting, but the lack of editing for this book is rediculous. Way too many spelling errors and even some paragraphs were printed twice. One after the other. I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book.

Very poorly researched, badly written, and attributes a great deal to Lilith erroneously. I'm happy to have been gifted a copy. If I'd paid for it, I would have needed my money back. The book is just a coaster in my house now.

I like this book a lot, it has Invocations,Meditations,Dream Work,and lots of Rites.
This is a book for the left hand path practitioner and those who love Lilith.
Theres lots of rites that will keep you busy for quiet some time,and they are all
very powerfull! and its not a short little book its about 150 pages but its nothing but
rites and workings.Its a very Powerful Tome dedicated to Lilith!
And it seems to have come to me,because it was given to me by a friend,Dave,who also gave
me Rites of Lucifer, another powerful book.He bought both books from Amazon.

About the Author
David O'Malley is an award-winning writer, director and producer for motion pictures and television. His has developed projects for Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Tri-Star Pictures, as well as NBC and ABC television networks. His extensive credits include screenplays for the MGM comedy Fatal Instinct, cult horror classic The Boogens, and the action thriller Edge of Honor, as well as network television movies and episodic series.  He both wrote and directed the period drama Mountain Man, the adventure film Kid Colter, the action comedy Easy Wheels, and romantic comedy Kalamazoo starring Mayim Bialik.  In addition to an Emmy Award, he is recipient of a Silver Medal from the Atlanta Film Festival, a writing award from the Festival International du Film de L'Internet and was a Feature Finalist at the Sundance Film Festival. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Karen.

A Cold Day In Hell

Farce, romp, screwball comedy...whatever label you want to stick on this debut novel, Hiding In Hibbing is well worth your time. If you were alive in 1971, but too stoned to recall the details, laugh out loud at David O'Malley's refresher course in a fascinating, on-the-verge time, brought to life through the antics of four hapless guys who only want to cadge a free hotel room in a snow storm. By the time they realize their little white lie has become a downhill-rolling snowball, picking up human freight as it careens toward the inevitable collision, it's too late for them to do anything other than hang on for the ride. I recommend you pick up this book and join them.

You will love this book.

From the opening tragedy to the perfect ending, O'Malley kept me totally enthralled-captivated really-by the flow of events in between. He perfectly captures the foibles that make humans so entertaining; self importance, self pity, self delusion, self aggrandizement and the hunger for the famous, among many others.
O'Malley makes the storm enclosed world of four young men trapped by their desire to not freeze to death in their VW van come to life in marvelous and hilarious detail. The cast of citizens of Hibbing are a perfect support for the story.
I loved this book and you will too.

Fun from start to finish

What a fun read! I wasn't sure where this adventure was going to take me ... and was thrilled that amongst all the zaniness, there was real heart-and-soul. Bits of advertising history, bits of music history, bits of real life all woven together to make a completely charming escapade.

This is an extraordinary system which maps out various life and business cycles. It is far more definite and understandable than astrology and puts one in the flow of daily events throughout the year. I can't imagine living without it. Highly, highly recommended.

Get you life in gear with life cycles, and your life wil flow better

Whether you are a student of higher knowledge or just a bit curious, this book is an excellent read. Everyone can benefit from learning to coincide their life thru life cycles. The book goes into great detail about how life flows in cycles. Every day, year and life is broken down into periods and each one is custom to the individual.
Like all the books I've read by H. Spencer Lewis, his language is easy to read and follow. You don't have to be a Rosicrucian to benefit from the teachings in this book!

The Oneness Blessing by Paula Rosenfeld is an excellent book which teaches how to overcome the worst impulses of the human spirit like the id.The process begins with imagining a higher order of existence.Each of us must rise above the routine conditioning which all of us experience from having to fit within an established order in our limited periphery.

The author reviews a 5 step process for becoming a happier person.The significance of this process is to learn how to cope with negativity.The first step is to overcome pain by recognizing the symptoms of inner resistance.The second is to accept yourself fully. The next step is to inhale slower and focus on the intuitive feelings which reside internally.A related step is to dig deep and explore where the pain resides.Finally, continue to dwell on your negative internal feelings until they dissipate into a state of contentment or a general equilibrium.

The book explores the highly controversial area of repairing human relationships. All of us contend with difficult situations, hurts, slights and other negative human emotions from time to time.The key to resolving these things emotionally is to forgive them unconditionally in order to move on.The related concept is that extreme negativity causes great stress-even on a cellular level.

Sometimes, ancestral influences or negative belief systems from the past can interfere with current functioning.In these instances,the individual has to try to go back, identify these negativities and view them for what they are.The book deals with cravings and addictions too. Fantastic book!

I’m reading Paula Rosenfeld’s new book, “The Oneness Blessing”. For the sake of full disclosure, I too am a Oneness Trainer, but I do not know Paula and have never met her, so my review is completely impartial and unbiased. I feel compelled to write a review of this book, something I’ve never done before, simply because it is such a treasure.

When I heard someone had written another Oneness book, I was skeptical and ready to be underwhelmed and even disappointed. But I ordered a copy nonetheless just in case, and I wanted to be supportive of a fellow trainer.

Not only am I not disappointed, I’m in love with this book. It is well-written, concise, very comprehensive, and obviously written from the heart. It’s not only the perfect introduction to Oneness and Deeksha for those knowing nothing about it, but it’s also a great reference for those us of who have been involved with Oneness for years.

This book clearly explains not only why you should care about spiritual awakening, enlightenment, and all higher states of consciousness, but also how Deeksha and the tools available within Oneness can get you there. There are passages in the book written by other Oneness Trainers sharing their insights and experiences which are priceless.

With delightful, tongue-in-cheek humor, P. G. Wodehouse continues the adventures of Bertie Wooster, an often silly member of the upper class who depends on his much more sensible "gentleman's gentleman," Jeeves, to keep his life from falling apart. In this novel, Wooster has been growing a mustache for the two weeks that Jeeves has been on a shrimping holiday, and he fears that Jeeves will not like it. Sure, enough Jeeves does not, and neither do any of his other friends--except for Lady Florence Craye, his former fiancée, now engaged (to Bertie's great relief) to Stilton Cheesewright.

The fate of the mustache is only the starting point for Wodehouse's comedy of errors, however, as Bertie goes from London to his Aunt Dahlia's country home, where Lady Florence, Stilton Cheesewright, and Percy Gorringe, a young man who wants to produce a play based on Lady Florence's book, are also in attendance. As Lady Florence and Stilton Cheesewright play out their on-again, off-again romance, Percy is casting longing eyes at Florence, who is flirting with Bertie, once again.

As is always the case with Wodehouse, events quickly become more complex. Percy wants Bertie to invest one thousand pounds in the play. Aunt Dahlia, wanting to sell her magazine, decides to "salt the mine," secretly selling her pearls so she can serialize a novel by a famous romance author to make the magazine more attractive. Her husband, at this point, decides to have the pearls appraised. Bertie takes Florence to a nightclub to "do research for her new novel," and he is arrested. Not surprisingly, it is the resilient Jeeves who comes to the rescue, time and time again, proving that good sense and grounding in the real world are far more important than the silly pretensions of Bertie and his friends.

Wodehouse's gentle satire of upperclass life makes his novels appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. His word play, consummate sense of irony, and ability to make dialogue sound simultaneously absurd and realistic create a fast-moving set of outrageous scenes in which Jeeves, the "gentleman's gentleman" proves to be the real hero, the one person who knows how to live in this silly world. n Mary Whipple

Cecil again is the perfect Wodehouse reader

To the ever growing Audio Partners catalogue of complete books on tape can be added yet another of those hilarious Jeeves novels, this one called "Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit." Written in 1954, this Bertie Wooster epic brings in many characters familiar from earlier works (Roderick Strode, Aunt Agatha, Uncle Tom, Frances Craye, Stilton Cheesewright) and many all-too familiar situations. Yes, Wodehouse does repeat himself, but I look upon it as ringing the changes. A line of bells is a line of bells, but their various combinations are what make things interesting.

Again Bertie is trying to avoid both marriage and having his spine broken in an increasing number of places, again having to purloin a valuable object to help out his only likable aunt, again depending on Jeeves first, middle, and last to extricate himself from dilemmas of his own doing and (at least in this book) those of others. Of the four actors assigned to read these novels and short stories on Audio Partners tapes, I think Jonathan Cecil is the best. He gives Wooster just that goofy intonation and all the other characters their due, making this set of four audio tapes a real humdinger. I have grown to realize that it is not so much that Wodehouse says funny things as that he says ordinary things in a funny way. That is why almost all of the Jeeves adventures are narrated first person by Wooster himself.
Just the ticket to cheer one up after a hard day or during a long boring drive.
As a PS, there is a very good life of Wodehouse by David A. Jasen put out by Schirmer Trade Books, "P.G. Wodehouse: A Portrait of a Master." It makes an easy read and brings you closer to the creator of the dreamworld in which lives the Woosters and the rest.

The BEST Jeeves and Wooster ever!

With no disrespect intended to Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, I believe that Michael Horden and Richard Briers are the best Jeeves and Wooster. The story here is a better adaptation of Wodehouse's book, something that was never a concern for the TV adaptations. There's a pacing that is more akin to what I expect when I read the books too.

That said, this collection, recorded for the BBC and broadcast in 1979 is one of the best of the released series. The cast and characters are colorful and hilarious.

My only beef is the same one I'd have for any of the series, or any BBC drama from this time (with the exception of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)- the sound effects library at this time was not very complete and you can tell that the dogs and cats are humans making the noises.

Fortunately the quality of the writing/adaptation/performances far outshines ANY slight imperfection. This is a great set for anyone who loves Wodehouse or anyone who needs a primer. Induldge. It's well worth it!

Jerome was an English writer who is best known for his comic travel story, Three Men in a Boat, and the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Raised in poverty, Jerome entered into various careers in the railway, theatre, education, and law before his comic essays were accepted for publication. His writing career firmly established with the publication of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome went on to publish more than thirty works of prose and plays before his passing in 1927.

Great Book About Life, Love, and Marriage

It's not often a book will move me to tears and laughter in almost the same breath but this one does and more. Jerome K. Jerome discusses the joys and hardships of courtship, marriage and fatherhood with his usual wit coupled with a perspicuity and insight that is as heartbreaking as it is breathtaking. A must -read for any Jerome fan, as well as for anyone who would like to experience the world from the point of view of an insightful nineteenth century humorist with an understanding of his world. Outstanding.

I enjoyed reading Mr. Jerome's insights as they apply to everyday life. At times they seemed autobiographical with a tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecating humor. I could hear the tone of "Three Men in a Boat" in this example of his writing.

The MANSE Bulb is a grotesque story about a small-town-community that falls to pieces because of a mere light bulb. In an isolated town in desert-like surroundings a mysterious building emerges overnight. On the front side of the building, just above the entrance door, a name is written in black capital letters: MANSE. The building turns out to be a factory producing light bulbs. Even stranger is the fact that it’s running unmanned. A young man Willard is hired by MANSE to become their representative. He is an outgoing man with no obligations and often acts on his impulses. Soon, he adapts to his new role as MANSE’s associate. The job offers him a variety of assignments. The town inhabitants are completely amazed by the MANSE bulb, as they have never seen a light bulb before. The excitement, however, doesn’t last long. The MANSE bulbs have side effects, which turns its popularity around. People begin to discard their bulbs all over town and that’s when things start to go wrong.

A fun and peculiar story

A very fun and peculiar little story, about a small society in a little town almost forgotten by time. Highly recommended for the almost zen-like state if mind it induces while reading.
