Do Not Open For 50 Years: Book 3, The Cooper Family Saga, by Patty Friedmann

"Fans of Friedmann's TOO JEWISH will want to open DO NOT OPEN." -Southern Jewish Life
THREE GENERATIONS OF WITTY, WILLFUL WOMEN…WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?
The world turns upside down when Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, blasting apart three generations of women in the final installment of the The Cooper Family Saga. Darby Cooper, the daughter of Bernie and Letty whom we met in Too Jewish and came of age with in Too Jewish: The Next Generation, has become a bestselling New Orleans author, drawing on the tragedy of her father’s life.

But despite her success, family, as always, is complex and problematic. Letty, so loving in Too Jewish, has morphed into a self-centered and willful woman—far from the kind of wise bubbeh Darby expected for her daughter Honor. But it turns out Honor is very much Letty’s girl. However, Letty’s gone missing after the storm, leaving her daughter perplexed and ambivalent. Although not yet sad. Because Letty's pretty indomitable--your classic Tough Old Babe in designer clothes and teetering heels,

Still the traumatic search for Letty would be Darby's main post-storm event if Honor hadn’t come back from evacuating to Florida with the boyfriend from hell. Sciutto claims he's a mobster and, in all other ways (let's start with crude and intolerant), is a betrayal of every core value Darby has rescued from her tragic and treacherous family history. Furthermore, as she struggles in temporary quarters in shattered post-Katrina New Orleans, Darby also has to confront the same long-lost high-school classmates whose cruelty played a nasty role in her father’s death decades before. Fortunately for the reader, her grief and bewilderment are tempered by her quick wit and humorous take at even the darkest moments.

Fans of the trilogy will eat this one up, as the Cooper women, so often so far from each other emotionally, draw ever closer, finding just how strong the bonds of family and love can be. Having followed them this far, we know and love all their quirks, all their neuroses, almost all their jokes (but there are so many!). But here’s what we don't know--will they manage to overcome their differences and finally pull together? We’re betting on them!

Who will like it: Fans of Jewish fiction, especially quirky family life fiction, like The Royal Tenenbaums, the works of Jonathan Tropper, early Philip Roth (Good-bye Columbus), and those who appreciate humorous fiction and a witty turn of phrase in women’s fiction. The Cooper women are nothing if not sharp—and capable of trading the kind of barb that’s so true-to-life you almost don’t laugh. As always, Patty Friedmann’s sly, dark humor and knowing take on families—especially distressed ones—combine with her smooth, quirky writing for a witty and satisfying read.

A dysfunctional family, but functioning like a champ
By M. A. Harper
As a Cooper-Family addict, I couldn't wait to find out what happened to everybody after the events of TOO JEWISH: THE NEXT GENERATION, and am I ever psyched! Patty Friedmann doesn't write treacle and her characters are too real to guarantee conventionally happy endings, but I trusted her to tell a satisfying story and she's pulled it off with five HUGE stars. "People can't change after a certain age," narrator Darby Cooper is warned. Yet she detects a few of them... adjusting, maybe? To post-Katrina New Orleans. To relationship realities. To their calamitous, shared past. Packed with honest hilarity (a possibly-faux Gotti? an eighty-something slut?), DO NOT OPEN surprises on every page, but with nary an over-reach for the comic just for comedy's sake. The conclusion made me want to stand up and cheer. I don't know when I've read a wiser, wittier, more heartening book.

Don't wait 50 years to open!
By Anti-K
Never would I thought that Hurricane Katrina would be a source of humor. But then I remembered Patty Friedman is wirting. If anyone can bring humor out of tragedy in one moment and heart wrenching sadness in the next it would be she. From Patty's first book to this one her gifts in creating characters who are so wonderful in their extravagant personalities are inimitable. I am looking forward to her next book and the next.....
Keep writing Patty!

A Consummation Devoutly to Be Wished
By Patience
Our reward for having waited faithfully for the concluding novel in Friedmann's fabulous Cooper/Kuper family saga is "Do Not Open for 50 Years". And what a reward it is! I am reminded of Polonius' description of "tragical, comical, historical, pastoral" drama, for "Do Not Open" has elements of all these genres, tightly woven in the wry, witty, and, ultimately wise prose confected by this well-respected observer of the New Orleans family scene. Friedmann never disappoints, whether providing richly evocative dialogues between and among the generations of Cooper/Kuper women or contributing narrative not yet heard in the many tellings of the city's post-Katrina stories. Friedmann also offers a welcome and unexpected window into the realities of the publishing world. As always, Friedmann causes us to care deeply for her characters, the good, the bad, and the irreconcilable. Without sinking into sentimentalism, she develops her characters as real people, showing in subtle but powerful ways the surprising heroism in the ordinary and conventional William, the loving strength in the shallow and self-absorbed Letty, and the fire of Darby's love hidden behind armor tried in the fire of persecution at the hands of the "mean girls" in her life. Friedmann's concluding chapter brings the "tragical, comical, historical, pastoral" drama that is her trilogy to a resolution that, while clearly not a Hollywood ending (which is rightly expected to be eschewed by this talented writer), is completely satisfying. The reader is left with the knowledge that Bernie's is a legacy that will endure not only through five decades and five generations, but beyond. For those of us who have loved Bernie from the first pages of "Too Jewish", and watched those he loved deal with his loss over the next two volumes, this is "a consummation devoutly to be wished", but turning Hamlet's comment on death into an affirmation of life itself. As always, Friedmann's love of language and clear, concise prose enable the reader to move through the story, enjoying what "literary fiction" is at its best. I wish there were more than five stars available to award this novel, so I'll have to settle for five stars, joined by the sixth star, the author herself.
