The Great War and religion

This year - 2014 - marks the centennial anniversary of the beginning of the Great War. There have been many books issued to mark this anniversary - books about politics, warfare, societal changes - but American author Philip Jenkins's book, "The Great and Holy War: How World War 1 Became a Religious Crusade, is the first book I've seen focusing on the influence religion had on the war and the countering influence that the war had on religion.

Philip Jenkins divides his book - roughly - into two halves. The first, concentrating on the actual war years - 1914 to 1918 - and the second, which looks at the post-war period into the 1930's and 1940's. In August,1914, the soldiers of France, Germany, Great Britain, and the other combatants marched off to battle. "God, King, and Country" was a rallying cry and most soldiers - and their leaders - thought they'd be home for Christmas, 1914. They were "home for Christmas" - those who survived the carnage - but not until Christmas, 1918. Most leaders, on both sides, thought this war would be like the two that came before it, 1866 and 1870, short and sweet. And, in fact, the Germans made it almost to the outskirts of Paris in 1914, before being turned back. The war settled into bunkers and trenches for four years, opposing armies facing each other through barbed wire and bullets.

One of the Ten Commandments is "Thou Shalt Not Kill". But what were the church leaders on both sides saying as war broke out? Something like "Thou Shalt Not Kill...unless it's your enemy who are doing dreadful things to Belgian babies/Nurses/Nuns, etc." The war was greatly supported by the clergy - both Christian and Jewish - and soldiers marched off, blessed for battle by their religious leaders. Jenkins looks at how mainline religious institutions supported the war effort. And at how "sects" began to pop up, as well as the occult as mourning parents and wives sought comfort in trying to communicate with their dead loved ones.

Religion also played a part in the political processes of the war. In Germany, at the war's end and aftermath, the Jews were blamed along with other minority groups, as having "stabbed the soldiers in the back", thus bringing about German defeat. These sentiments, and the actions that followed them, were to play a part in the rise of the anti-Semitic Nazi Party in Germany. In the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church was sidelined as the Communist Party became almost the state religion. Jenkins also looks at the Armenian Massacres in Turkey in 1915 and after.

The second part of the book looks at other parts of the world influenced by the Great War. How Turkey and the other Muslim areas became political entities after the Ottoman Empire collapsed after the war. And how the Holy Land remained the political hot potato when the British and French began making arbitrary decisions of what areas became what countries, post war.

Philip Jenkins has written a lively book about a relatively unexamined part of the Great War and the later years. This book shouldn't be missed by any arm-chair historians.

How WWI wrecked Christendom, catalyzed secularism, and unleashed global religious forces still at work today

The Great War (1914–1918) is a turning point in world history. It destroyed empires and created nations. It wrecked Christendom, catalyzed secularism, and unleashed global religious forces that continue to affect the world today. “Only now, after a century,” writes Philip Jenkins in The Great and Holy War, “are we beginning to understand just how utterly that war destroyed one religious world and created another.”

Many books have been published to mark the centennial of the start of World War I. Some narrate the history of the entire conflict; others study this or that aspect of it in depth. Jenkins’s book belongs to the latter category. It focuses on how European combatants framed the conflict using the holy war rhetoric of medieval Christendom. Nations used this rhetoric whether or not they had an established state church. Soldiers were viewed as martyrs. They claimed angelic and miraculous interventions on the battlefield. Among the heterodox, paranormal, occult experiences were common. Even radical social movements such as Soviet Communism, though they were avowedly godless, expressed their aspirations in apocalyptic and millenarian terms.

After surveying the religious dimension of the rhetoric and experience of the combatants, Jenkins then shows some of the global consequences that arose in the aftermath of war. The Great War was truly a world war in that the empires fought over their colonies and enlisted their colonized subjects to fight on European soil. As they enlisted this or that colonized group to fight for them, they unleashed forces such as Zionism, anticolonialism, Armenian genocide, African indigenous churches, and politicized Islam—forces that had sometimes explicit, sometimes implicit religious dimensions.

These forces continue to influence world events today. Consider the Israel-Gaza conflict. The British Mandate in Palestine came about because of the Entente Powers defeat of the Ottoman Empire, which until then had held sway in that region. The United Kingdom had promised Zionists that it would work to establish a national Jewish homeland in Palestine in 1917. But it also made promises to Arabs, and established Hashemite kingdoms in Transjordan and Iraq after the war. Facing Western dominance in their ancestral homelands, Arabs developed two contrary responses: a secularized Arab pan-nationalism and a politicized Islam. Secularism was the choice of many Arab Christians and other minorities, who longed for Arab statehood but did not want Muslim dominance. Politicized Islam, on the other hand, longed to reestablish the caliphate, the Muslim umma (peoplehood, empire), and sharia as the law of the land. In Palestine, the Palestinian Liberation Organization and Hamas represent these contrary responses.

Or consider the depredations of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which has been in the news of late for expelling Christians from their ancestral homelands. Until the Great War, the Middle East, though predominantly Muslim, contained substantial Christian minorities, groups that claimed direct links to the Apostolic Age and whose tenure in the land preceded the rise of Islam by centuries. This was especially the case in the region now known as Turkey, whose major cities were mentioned in the New Testament and which had been the Byzantine heartland in the 1100 years between Constantine and the fall of Constantinople. In 1915, fearing that the Entente Powers—who explicitly interpreted the Great War in terms of crusade and holy war—would destroy the caliphate and restore Christendom in Asia Minor, the Ottoman Turks began a genocide and expulsion of the Armenians, the Ottoman Empire’s largest Christian minority, as well as against Assyrian and Chalcedonian Christians. The genocide of the Armenians gave the Nazis hope that they likewise could murder the Jews with impunity. “Who, after all,” asked Adolph Hitler, “speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?”

It is easy for a Christian to point out these problems, which involve politicized Islam. But Christian readers of The Great and Holy War need to take to heart the lesson it teaches us about how easily biblical images and rhetoric, as well as the images and rhetoric of Christian tradition, can be used to incite, support, and sustain brutal warfare that kills millions. “[I]t is God who has summoned us to this war,” proclaimed Randolph McKim of Washington DC’s Episcopal Church of the Epiphany as the United States entered the war in 1917. “It is his war we are fighting.… This conflict is indeed a crusade. The greatest in history—the holiest. It is in the profoundest and truest sense a Holy War…. Yes, it is Christ, the King of Righteousness, who calls us to grapple in deadly stifle with this unholy and blasphemous power [Germany].”

But just three years earlier, German Lutheran pastor Dietrich Vorwerk had reworked the Lord’s Prayer to say, in part, this: “Our Father, from the height of heaven, / Make haste to succor Thy German people. / Help us in the holy war…. In thy merciful patience, forgive / Each bullet and each blow / That misses the mark. / Lead us not into the temptation / Of letting our wrath be too gentle / In carrying out They divine judgment…. Thine is the kingdom, / The German land. / May we, through Thy mailed hand / Come to power and glory.”

Even granting, as Jenkins does, that the Entente Powers had more justice in their cause than the Central Powers had in theirs, the contrary rhetoric of the Christians on both sides of this conflict call into question whether God was truly on either side or whether each was simply using him to justify their nation’s actions. No wonder, in the aftermath of the war, Christendom died in Europe and secularism began to take its place. It had been killed by Christians.

For revealing the religious contours of a European (and American) religious world order now gone; for demonstrating that Christians—not just Muslims—have a history of politicizing their religion for violent purposes, even in recent times; and for showing how the religious world we inhabit is one birthed in the fires of the Great War, I highly recommend Philip Jenkins’s The Great and Holy War.

The Great War and Global Religion

Jenkins offers in the first few chapters a straightforward account of the Great War, and examines the religious rhetoric of the war, the religious practices of the combatants, notions of apocalyptic resulting from the war, and the impact of this horrible war on the continuing religious faith of Europe.

Where things get really interesting, and in keeping with Jenkins' larger academic project, are the late chapters. In the ruins of Christendom, Jenkins notes that some of the most important results of this war include a new situation for Judaism (Zionism), spiritual liberation for those from below (subject people's of the world), under-reported genocide in Armenia, and the shift of Christianity to the global South, as well as a changing landscape for Islam in the absence of a Caliphate.

Jenkins writes, "Most Western observers [of the time] viewed affairs in Africa and Asia as colorful irrelevancies, and that was particularly true in matters of religion. Except for a handful of specialized academics, why should anyone care about the fate of Christianity outside its natural home in Europe and North America, or pay the slightest heed to the historical dead end that was Islam? A century later, such disregard looks very blinkered. So much of the religious history of the subsequent era does in fact focus on those twin facts: Islam, and Christianity outside the Euro-American sphere. So much of that story, in fact, is a continuation and sequel of the turmoil that began in 1914. Those from below would not always remain in the humble places that the empires assigned them" (285).

For any number of reasons this is the book to read on the centenary of the Great War. Whether readers are looking for a historical review, insights into the religious landscape of the period, or understanding of the war's continuing impact, this book is the place to start.

Interesting read on your idle time

With all honesty since I grew up in a religious family and studied in a Catholic school I am not really a firm believer of Numerology. Although, when you got nothing to do and you want something to entertain your idle time then this book is definitely a fun and interesting read. I do agree that some of the things the book mentioned fits well my personality. Maybe there must be some truths to these kind of things. The book, I fund it too brief. I wish that it's more longer and more explanations in each chapter. The chapters were organized though and it's well-written. I did not see any major grammar lapses or even typing errors. I think this is a cool and entertaining book.

Perfect book for numerologists, advanced and just starting out. I was an already certified and trained Advanced Numerologist when I purchased this book and I still learned things. This book explains you everything

This book consists of basic concepts of Numerology. In this book author explains how to calculate life path number, destiny number, etc. It’s an introductory book on numerology.
I can't believe all the things written in this book could really be true. Numerology is studying about your life through numbers such as birthdays. In this book, you will find instructions about interpreting your birthday to get a number and then reading the description of that number and find out about yourself. This book is entertaining, though. If you do not have something to read on your free time, this is a good book to read. Something new can be learnt from this book just like other ordinary books. This is good for number lovers. This book does not have complex calculation so nothing to worry.
This book explains you everything you need to know about numerology a gives you an impressive amount of tips and recommendations that you could easily follow and also gives you great examples of what you need to do to get the answers you are seeking. If you hated math you will feel quite the opposite with numerology and appreciate how beneficial would be to your life. I know now that numerology can be practiced along with other forecast methods. I also learned how long numerology takes to give results.
This book is interesting for people who are working something related to the numerology, but complete beginners can read something interesting as well. I highly recommend this book if you're new to numerology!!!!!!!

This book is great for beginners with clear easy to understand instructions

I was given an advanced copy for Beta readins as a cross over Magician newer to Daemonolgy , to check ease of instructions and understand-ability.This book is great for beginners with clear easy to understand instructions, warnings and advice, but doesn't dumb down. It is also nice to have all of it in a separate tome , less bulky than the full size books I already own... If you have advanced training it might seem redundant but is a helpful refresher and as previously stated it is nice to have this info in a separate volume for easy reference.

This book on pacts comes from a very different perspective than most people seem to think about them. It was easy to read and understand and from a point of respect and care, not Hollywood hype movie garbage. I am glad I added this book to my library.

Good Book

Very useful book there is there is much good practical advice within it but I feel not enough emphasis is placed on the dangers of not following through on your side of an agreement. If one breaks any agreement with any spirit or Daemon expect what was given to be taken back at minimum and you can potentially cause an issue between you and that entity. Otherwise the book is useful and to the point.

About the Author
N.J. Dawood founded The Arabic Advertising & Publishing Company in 1959, which is now one of the major producers of Arabic typesetting outside of the Middle East. He is best known for his translation of the Koran, the first in contemporary English, for the Penguin Classics in 1956. It has now sold over a million copies.

An Important Read

I had no real interest in Islam until 9/11, after which I picked up and read Islam: The Straigh Path by John Esposito. I then did an independent study of Sufism, which is what sparked my interest in Islam enough to read The Koran, its central text.
Although I cannot comment on the other reviewers' differing views on the accuracy of this translation, I can write that this translation does convey something of the thunderous power that Muhammad's earliest listeners must have heard and experienced when these suras (speeches - the Koran is a collection of 114 speeches given by Muhammad, which Muslims believe were revelations given to him by God) were first delivered.
There are a number of things that one could mention content-wise, as each sura deals with something slightly different. God, women, human relationships, one's relationship to the non-believing world, Judaism, Christianity, and Arabic paganism are all touched upon in the Koran (along with other topics). It reads much like the Bible at points, and many of the more familiar Biblical stories are here, along with extra-Biblical legends. The Koran really isn't a bizarre religious text, but very much belongs to the genealogy of monotheistic, prophetic writings.
One of the things that I really liked about this particular translation was the way that Dawood cross-referenced relevant Biblical texts from both the Tanak/Old Testament and the New Testament. The footnotes detailing Arabic pagan practice were also helpful, as were the footnotes giving basic historical information. One certainly gets a feel for where the Koran was coming from and who it was going to when it was first delivered.
In reading this, it is worth reflecting on how a passage can lend itself to multiple interpretations. There are very few passages in the Koran that make any mention of war, and far more passages that assert that one should leave judgment to God. Yet, in our own time, these passages on war seem to be used - in some circles, at least - far more often than the passages that counsel one to merely give warning and leave the rest to God.
I think that the Koran is worth reading, especially given the current socio-political climate and I found this particular translation to be helpful due to Dawood's many footnotes. Regardless of the translation you end up buying, at least check this one out as it will give you an important insight into the world of the early Muslims, which continues to shape our world today.

A summary, not complete

N.J. Dawood's translation has been held in high regard throughout the English speaking world (though not by English speaking MUSLIMS). It certainly achieves the translator's stated goal: to render the Koran in contemporary English. In comparison to Abdullah Y. Ali and especially Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, Dawood's translation flows easily and naturally, while retaining in some part the forcefulness of the original Arabic.

However, a key point missed by some who run across this book in the store is this: Dawood has heavily edited and OMITTED portions of the Koran that he felt were repetitious or unnecessarily lengthy. While that's fine for a general audience, completists and orthodox Muslims will be irked by the omission of parts of the text. In short, this is NOT a complete Koran.

That being said, the language and diction of this translation is certainly to be admired. Dawood's offering is clear and eminently readable. Although this book is inappropriate for any serious study of the Koran, it is more than adequate as a first Koran for the non-Muslim taking an interest in Islam.

The Most Lucid and Accurate Available

Reviewers complaining of inaccuracies here are off base. For example, Dawood never translated 7:31 ("children of Adam") as "children of Allah." This is impossible, as one of Dawood's nice touches is that he has always translated Allah (correctly) as "God." (By the way, Yusuf Ali made this same wise choice in his translation, but the holier-than-thou revisers of his work who continue to publish it under his name have mucked up this & a whole lot else.)
Dawood's knowledge of Qur'anic Arabic is deep and subtle. As another reviewer has noted, a remarkable feature of his translation is how much it has improved over time (over the successive reeditions put out by Penguin). For this reason, definitely buy this book new. Usually, when translators go back and fiddle with their work, they make it worse. But Dawood's labor of love is evident in the gradual progress he has made towards the clearest and most accurate phrases and rhythms to capture the original.
Dawood does not put on a show by dressing his text with long, technical, or argumentative footnotes (as do many editions of the Qur'an). But his knowledge of traditional comment on the sacred text (and of philology) is the equal of any other translator's. Add to this, the fact that Dawood's English is graceful and limpid (moreso than the work of Arberry, Pickthall, et al.).
Why only four stars? I await the day that a philologically astute translation appears with proper annotations. Look at the study edition of the New Jerusalem Bible, or at the New Oxford Annotated Bible, and you will see what readers of the Qur'an (in English) are sorely lacking.

Living with intent is much easier when you're not worried about some serious life issues like putting food on the table. An example from this author is, "downloading" movies on her kids iPads before travelling adds to her stress level. Another example, she spontaneously decided to take a week at an expensive fitness retreat, for herself. It's difficult for me to identify with someone who has enough financial blessings that they buy iPads for their children and can go to an expensive retreat, for herself.

Living with intent when the decisions in your life are food, rent, heat or medicine. Or, how to keep your children safe while living on the "wrong side of the tracks".

Obviously this book did not reach me on the deep level I had hoped for. But for financially secure folks that can actually be there to pick their kids up from school instead of praying for good tips today, it could be helpful.

A surprisingly relatable celebrity self help book that will actually make you feel better about yourself ...

I'll admit I was a bit skeptical before starting to read this book. I have my fair share of self help and parenting books on my bookshelf and the vast majority of them fail to capture my attention. When they are written by well known people, I have often found that they are even more likely to lapse into random name dropping and platitudes of obviousness masked as advice. Thankfully, this book is different.

From the first chapter, I was immediately intrigued by the author's candidness and willingness to display her imperfections. As she shares her personal stories of struggling to fit all the challenges of being an entrepreneur and a mom into the average day, something interesting happens. Despite her famous family and direct access to superstars and celebrities ... Mallika Chopra comes across as being just like any of us.

And that, perhaps, is the greatest victory of this book. In a crowded self help category where every star seems to become an overnight parenting expert and life coach - Living With Intent is surprisingly human. Which, of course, is kind of the point. Chopra's INTENT is to be a great mom and successful business person. We see ourselves in her entertainingly honest anecdotes of sometimes not quite managing to succeed. Ultimately, it is her deeply relatable journey to get there which I found so engaging, and the reason I highly recommend this book.

A good read, that can teach you a thing or two.

Like many self-help books, Living with Intent does aim to help its readers to find the road to a more happier, fuller life. When I started reading the book, I was very curious as to what advices I'd find. Surprisingly enough, if at times there were passages that resonated as "oh I have already heard that before", many caught my attention and earned a couple of highlights and side notes. This book does not provide us with miracle solutions, but rather enables us to accept our flaws and learn to rectify our trajectory for a better lifestyle.

One thing I loved the most about Mallika's writing was that she wasn't afraid to expose her imperfections and her doubts, making her narrative even more appealing and easy to relate to. She didn't try to shove down some universal truths but rather explained why she believed in this or that, or why she chose to take a leap of faith and embrace a life of purpose and intent.

However, if the book started off well, the way it was ending felt a bit forced. Suddenly names were dropped off, as if to advertise for fellow celebrities. The book even ended with an afterword of her famous father, Deepak Chopra, and again, there was nothing really meaningful that was said there that justified the need for an afterwords. It seemed to me more like Mallika needed her father's endorsement to convince her readers to buy into her wordings, which to be honest was totally unnecessary because she had conveyed her message perfectly until the end. The fact that she only looked to interview famous people was also a bit of a rub.

Overall, I think the book was well written, the stories were beautiful and inspiring. If I got a bit annoyed at the end, I have learned a lot from the pages and I would recommend the book to anyone, who like me, is interested with living an intentional life.

Exciting, Fun, Fast-paced Read!

This book has everything: action, humor, romance, suspense. From the very unusual beginning to the action-packed end, I thought this book was especially well-written -- particularly for a first-time author. To me, the most appealing aspect of this book was Ryan's ability to mix subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) humor into even the most serious situation. The author has a GREAT sense of humor, and there were times that I actually had to put the book down to wipe the tears from my eyes. In addition, Ryan has a way with dialogue. Although the conversations between the characters served as the main means of character development, as the book progressed the characters grew increasingly more intricate and realistic until, by the end, it became hard not to sympathize with some of the bad guys even as I was rooting for the hero. In my opinion, "The Junkyard Dogs" is a darn good read and an impressive first work.

This crazy group of friends just can't seem to get a break, epic memories.

If there is one thing in this life that I do not like, it is bible thumping religious freaks. A while back I was doing a hike along the Appalachian Trail where I ran into multiple people promoting religion. I am all up for dealing with people promoting their religion but attempting to force it down the throats of others is painful. Hatt's story is absolutely hilarious and full of adventures that I can relate to. I particularly like how the story is based off of real life experiences from what it seems. Large Arms is an absolute nightmare and would drive me insane. Rule Nazi is quite the naughty girl with the American, sounds like they know how to have fun. I look forward to reading more of Hatt's epic adventure.

What a great little book on positivity. This book is filled to the brim with lots of great conceptual info, as well as practical advice. My favorite chapter was 6 -- Never sleep without a positive moment...it has taught me to be more grateful for the things I have.

Positive thinking can have a huge impact in your life. I am a believer that positive thinking can change your life for the better, make you healthier and possible more desirable to be around. No matter what it is, your job, relationship, friends, family or every day events, being positive will always result in a better outcome. Let's face it, No one wants to be around the "negative Nancy" ever and I wish people could realize that. This is why I am recommending that Everyone should take a minute, read this book and see how positive thinking can reflect in their life. Great book!

We all run into negative aspects of our life. They tend to bring us down, add to our stress, and even can affect our sleeping. This is a great book to help counter the negatives and start thinking a more positive way. It has great tips to have a more positive outlook on daily life. The book realizes that everything that is in our life may not be positive, but you can focus on the happier things rather than the negatives. I thought it was a very beneficial book, and I am going to try some of its recommendations.

Selinda Hart is a teacher and freelance writer and has written for online publications as well as for the National Radio program “Tia Maria” a talk show about ghosts, hauntings, and true paranormal experiences. A must buy.

Great read, especially on a dark, stormy night. The "Red Balloon" gave me goose bumps, I would have immediately packed my bags and moved out.

Selinda Hart has managed to capture and convey a series of paranormal events in a fascinating style that will place the reader in a state of feeling fully immersed as an actual witness. Her fluid narrative covers an interesting range of supernatural phenomena which includes her own personal experiences.
