A Gem: Small And Precious

Peace is not external, so we do not need to chase it. Peace is already present but we have to get in touch with it. This is attained through mindfulness: living in the present moment, in the here and now. Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen master and spiritual leader teaches mindfulness through conscious breathing and smiling. Connecting the body and mind, to find peace and happiness even in the most unlikely situations. Breathing and smiling! Is that it? You may be as skeptical as I was before practicing this exercise: breathe in, while reciting " breathing in I calm my body" then breathe out while smiling and reciting "breathing out I smile" do this three times! This is a very easy yet very effective exercise, do this often enough, in any position at any time (sitting, lying, driving, walking, before you eat, before you wash the dishes, when you hear the phone ring....) and enjoy being calm, relaxed and peaceful.
The author teaches us to be mindful of the people in our life, of the food we eat and of the environment around us.... Turn off the TV and instead walk in the park, visit a good friend, sit down for a meal with family or friends or even by yourself but before you dig in, breath smile, appreciate the food on the table, then eat mindfully, be aware of the taste, the smell, the texture, even if its only a bowl of rice, be happy, be thankful. He also teaches how to transform unpleasant feelings like anger for example into something more wholesome like understanding, using a 5-step method. By practicing understanding and loving speech instead of blaming and arguing we can help each other be happy. By knowing the true nature, the essence of the people around us we can enjoy each other. Mindfulness should lead to proactivity. We must be aware of the real problems of the world and of the suffering around us, and then with mindfulness we will know what to do to be of help.
This book is written clearly and beautifully. Full of inspiring stories and parables, meditations and practices, reflecting the author's wisdom and experience. Terrific and extremely effective, will make you calm and happy just reading it, then breathe, smile and be peaceful!

Peace Now is NOT Merely a Slogan

Hanh's book is a wonderful exhortation for all of us to find deep sprirituality in the midst of what we are NOW, what we do NOW, and simply the moment we call NOW. I greatly admire this Buddhist author's humility. He does not say "follow in my footsteps," but rather invites us to walk alongside him, and discover our own paths to "mindfulness." This is a very welcome change of pace from all the "spiritual" books that attempt to sell the author's own beliefs about God, or worse yet, attempt to promote the financial well-being of the author. Hanh has the resume to prove his sincerity -- having taken great risks to urge reconciliation at a time when the U.S. and Vietnam were torn by violent conflict. He adheres to the Zen tradition of making no demands on what people choose to believe, or what religion they should practice. "Peace Is Every Step" is a well expressed invitation to join him in this sincere spiritual quest.
A word of caution though -- you are not likely to benefit from the book unless you actually *practice* the techniques Hanh so eloquently describes. However, if you do, you will find peace, because it is already there inside of you. (And his other books are very much worth reading too!)

Begin Your Journey of Awareness

This book seems very simplistic on the surface, with what appear to be standard Eastern metaphors encouraging inner peace and awareness. Some examples are stories about meditating on a falling leaf or retreating to a quite room in your house. But as you make your way through the book and think about what you're reading, you'll find that Nhat Hanh is actually using these simple stories to make very profound points about how you can embark on a journey of inner peace. And this is serious inner peace as the Buddhists continually strive for, not just the stereotypes that you hear from Western folks who only see this stuff as a fad. Nhat Hanh describes how you can find serenity in the most mundane of activities, such as washing dishes, walking, eating, and even breathing (the breathing techniques he describes are also a key component of Yoga). His techniques for managing anger, depression, and frustration are incredibly useful and should be practiced by far more Westerners. The only flaw in this book is in some sections of Part 3, in which Nhat Hanh attempts to move these techniques from your inner world to the outer world, and contends that these methods of inner awareness can help solve the world's problems or war, hunger, crime, etc. if everyone just practiced them devoutly. He may be right about that, but this is far too idealistic for the real world, even if his Eastern interpretation is far more humane and open-minded than the Western view. Other than that minor flaw, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a way to cut down on stress or anger, and would like to improve your mental and emotional health.

The list of my favorite genre short-story authors hasn't changed all that much over the years. At the top of that list are writers such as Stephen King, Bentley Little, Graham Masterton, Ray Garton, Gary Braunback., and Chet Williamson. Of course there are other authors who I admire that write short fiction, but the ones I've listed above are absolute must-haves whenever a new collection of theirs is released.
Based on the strength of the 24 stories in Inflictions, John McIlveen is the latest addition to my list. If you live outside of New England, you might be scratching your head because his name may not be all that familiar. If that's so, then I'll say without reservation that John McIlveen may be the best genre short story writer you've never heard of.
McIlveen's tales run the gambit of dark fiction. It's obvious from this collection that the author has a gift for writing in many genres,specifically extreme horror, perversely comedic pieces, and eroticism. But no matter the subject or narrative, in Inflictions, McIlveen never fails to engage the reader.  Inflictions is highly recommended.

In his introduction to Inflictions, Christopher Golden describes JohnMcIlveen as an author who "pull[s] no punches." The short stories inthis collection prove that sentiment accurate. McIlveen's writing wrapsaround you like tentacles from a fog, and drags you into the ferociousmists kicking and screaming.  The stories in Inflictions are allloosely tied together under the broad theme of dark secrets. The talesexamine the sinister secrets we lock away from the public. McIlveentears away the façade of "normal" to expose the raw terror lurkingwithin. Abuse, lies, transgressions, and fear haunt these pages. Thetitle story highlights addiction, a topic threatening into the cliché,but in this case skillfully drawn in both sympathy and horror as wefollow protagonist down an endless spiral into nothingness. In "Make aChoice," we see a "typical" family trying to connect in a disconnected,modern world. Their attempt at "normal" turns into a terrifyingnightmare (no spoilers here) that will chill the blood. McIlveen's workreflects the ever-increasing isolation between individuals, and themonstrous results of that disconnect. His protagonists lose because they fail to see truth, reality, or their mistakes in time. Isn't this thedarkest, most terrifying fear we have? We will be the cause of our owndownfall? McIlveen has found that glowing coal of fear in our hearts,and he's ignited a firestorm.  The collection slows a little inthe middle with "Jerks." The idea is clever, but it's long and doesn'tentirely fit with the pacing of the shorter stories. Overall, this is an outstanding collection. McIlveen even manages to sneak in a bit ofhumor amidst the horror to keep his readers from sinking into the abyssentirely. Very well done and highly recommended

Inflictions is exactly what a collection of short stories should be: A window, a glimpse into the worlds an author creates, and a display of the range of emotions, characters, settings, and stories that author can tell. John McIlveen does it all masterfully.

From the dark, haunting, heartbreaking title story Inflictions, through the somewhat funny, borderline absurd (but still creepy!) Jerks, To Hope, which will fill you with anything but, and the truly stick-with-you, unforgettable A Perfect Man, this collection really does have something for everyone.

Wonderfully diverse, brilliantly written, captivatingly told, and perfectly assembled. You won't be sorry you bought Inflictions.

Nearly every story is fantastic and amazing

I became interested in this author's work after reading Infliction, which is in this collection, in Happy Little Horrors: Freak Show. I was intrigued by the themes of the story, which I don't want to give away since it is so short. It included things that I had struggled with myself, and the character turned it into a sort of superpower over her abuser. I thought that this was very powerful in a horrifying sort of way, and I needed to read more of McIlveen's work.

This collection did not disappoint. Nearly every story was more intriguing than the last. I read them as bedtime stories to myself, usually one story a night except for the few longer ones. Some of them are delightfully simple and other more convoluted, but each has a clear message (except only one that I didn't understand).

I expected all of these stories to be horror, but only some of them are. Some of them are more dystopian, and the one called Devotion, while sad, was rather hopeful. I think that Devotion may be my favorite story included here. That or Paint it Black though they are so different that I can't really compare them.

I highly recommend this book. I love nearly every single one of these stories, and this is the sort of book I'd recommend to other people to expose them to different styles of writing.

Roller Coaster Fiction

John McIlveen’s got guts. In his story collection, Inflictions, he not only shares with us the seedier, nastier side of human nature (and does he ever!), but he takes insane chances. In one story, a character makes an anachronistic joke that would be jarring in any other setting. The story is an over-the-top Western that’s already more than half parody, so it works. In a few others, he shows us the dangers of betrayal, the perils of greed and the weakness of human beings. McIlveen does not, as his introduction says, pull his punches. He’s honest with us, his readers, and despite what people might say, no one really wants to hear the truth. Truth is ugly. Truth is unsettling. Truth hurts. And, that, my friends is what makes him a good writer. Because he gives us the truth, albeit sometimes disguised by repulsive, abominable characters doing unspeakable things. Under the madness, behind the laughter, lies honesty. That’s what I want when I pick up a book. So, yeah. Pick up this book. Read it. Enjoy the ride.

Watching the master make his rounds

Vonnegut's novels were never tightly plotted or dizzlingly complex, and ever since The Sirens of Titans there's been less and less plot. But what we've gotten is more and more Vonnegut, which has turned out to be a good thing. His latest and (he says) his last novel turns out to be a hodgepodge of random musings, Vonnegut family history lessons, irrelevant asides and once in a while something that touches on a story. And somehow it works. The premise is that Vonnegut was trying to write a novel about everyone in the world being thrown back ten years and then being forced to relive those ten years. After it's over and time runs normally again, everyone is so used to not having free will that they don't know what to do. But that idea didn't take off and so we have this. Toeing the line between fact and fiction (among the best is the meeting between Vonnegut and longtime alter ego Kilgore Trout), this novel is more about Vonnegut than any other novel previously. He talks about life in general, speaks bluntly and warmly of his family, both living and dead, all in his easily read style, which makes pages fly past as you read but somehow they still manage to stick in your head. Yeah, it's not the innovation of Slaughterhouse-Five and the cutting cynicism of the earlier novels has been replaced by a sort of contented cynicism, as if his bitterness has settled on him like a comfortable old skin. There's nothing new here that you couldn't find in his other novels (all of which are highly recommended), even the structure is reminiscent of Breakfast of Champions, but the presentation is what counts here and everything comes across so effortlessly that it's a joy just to watch him put the novel together, even when chapters race past that are really only barely connected strings of random thoughts. More importantly it made me laugh outloud in more than a few spots, made me think in others and in some places was actually genuinely touching, something that's been missing in some of his latter day novels. Overall it's a fine extension of his work and while not his best, it's a great way to get acquainted or reacquainted with an author who's done some of the finest fiction of the last fifty years. If you're just getting to know Vonnegut, there's plenty more where this came from, and if you're coming from a long time back, you'll find plenty here that's familiar, but just as rewarding.

If you are looking for a plot, rising action or deep characters, don't read this. For those of us who have been Vonnegut fans, it reads like a Bible of his ideas. The best parts of a good number of his novels are the prologues. This book is a 195 page prologue, with about 10 pages of fiction. I had the opportunity to read Timequake back in July, (about three months before its offical release date) and I was thrilled when I reached the final page. Many of his devoted readers find his humanistic ideas to be the best stuff he writes. This book holds more of that than any other he has written. His ideas on his own age and demise as a writer add a ton to this beautiful farewell to the philosophy of Kurt Vonnegut. If you are unfamilar with him, and looking for a great book to start on, go back to Slaughterhouse-Five, Sirens of Titan or Cat's Cradle. If you are familiar with his stuff, this book simply serves as a great companion piece to his other books.

But, what about the timequake?

This is the third Vonnegut novel that I've read so far. I loved and hated this book. The 3 stars that I gave this book is somewhat unfair to Vonnegut because the book wasn't necessarily poor, it's just not what I had expected.
What I loved: the idea and creativity of a "timequake" and the scraps here and there of the timequake.
What I didn't expect: these little extra memoirs and the last third of the novel. You find yourself reading "a completely different book" consisting of Vonnegut's own personal reflections; you can just about call it an autobiography.
In conclusion, this is probably not the book for you if you're looking for something that flows and has well, a plot. Otherwise, if you're simply in for chunks of Vonnegut's classic satire, look no further!

Great, great book!

Wonderful book with lots of valuable information, both on predicting world and personal events. I have a lot of things to study in the coming weeks. I especially like the fact that Joni Patry shares her story of becoming an astrologer, so sweet.

Joni Patry is one of the best Neo-Vedic astrologers working today. I recommend not only her books, but also her online site galacticcenter.org, her online university if you wish to study this subject with a true master, and if anything at least a personal consult. She maintains positive and upbeat sessions with her clients even when there is serious business afoot. Those of us who have been long time fans and students know her true dedication to her craft. Good Reading

The world is ending. What will replace it has yet to be determined.

One of the things I like the most about zombies is how relentless they are. Other monsters can be outrun or outsmarted, but there’s almost nothing in the world that can stop these creatures. Mr. West’s version of them was particularly creepy because of how much time he took to describe the way their minds work. Those passages were really well done. I’ve read a lot of zombie fiction over the years. This was by far the scariest example of them that I’ve come across so far!

I would have liked to see more character development in this book, especially when it came to Hunter. He made decisions during the course of the plot that I didn’t always understand. What I did manage to figure out about his personality was fascinating, but there simply wasn’t enough information about it for me to form an accurate mental image of what it would be like to be in the same room as him or how the Rapture changed his personality.

The dialogue was short and efficient. Given the dangerous predicament they’d found themselves in, it made sense to me that Hunter and his friends wouldn’t be particularly interested in drawn-out discussions. I appreciated the fact that they showed their awareness of what was going on in part by choosing to stay quiet as much as they possibly could. It was a realistic response to their circumstances, and I liked that.

Zombie Rapture is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a fresh twist on this genre.

Charming Hero vs Cunning Zombies

If you love your horror with a good dose of snark and humor, like the good old days of Buffy and Angel, then this is the novel for you!

Hunter’s life is going great. He’s in love with his high school sweetheart, Jordan, and they’ve finally gotten to the “doing it” stage. What guy could want more? Naturally, that’s when the zombie apocalypse descends on his town. Everyone he knows is either dead, coming back from the dead, or running away from the dead. And these zombies aren’t shambling mindless idiots. These are fast, smart zombies—the worst kind there is. If they don’t get you and kill you right away, they’ll talk your ear off with wild ramblings about sinning, the Rapture, and the chosen until you start wondering if they could be right.

Hunter’s girlfriend is kidnapped. He and a tough, quirky band of misfits are determined to save her. So begins their cross country journey where they find how sneaky and dangerous the dead can be.

The author does a great job from beginning to end. Everything is perfect, from the funny and sympathetic hero to the exciting fight scenes that get more thrilling with every chapter. The prose is fantastic, making the book a real pleasure to read. Highly recommended!

Scary Good Fun

One thing I really like about Stuart West's writing is his ability to put a funny twist on the most serious situation.

Let's face it. Zombies are laughable to begin with (though I did read a book about zombie-ized ants being controlled by some kind of wasp). To make them scary is the hard part. Mr. West has done both. What's worse than a zombie holy roller who wants to "save" you by killing you so you'll be raised up in the rapture. That's incredibly scary because I think I've seen some of these zombies in action waving guns and screaming at everything they hate. And there ain't much they don't hate. It'd be a kindness to put them out of their misery. Hunter (the main dude) learns this lesson from his cowboy grandpa as the group of survivors fight their way through zombies to rescue Hunter's girlfriend. Yeah, that seems like a low priority given the circumstances, but young love is not to be denied.

Anyway, this is a wonderful take on the zombie theme. Why not have some laughs while you're in mortal danger? Makes it fun for the reader.

Why not 5 stars? Ah, I'm just tweaking Mr. West to keep him on his game. In this book, he's definitely got game.

Killer first novel for a 20 year old!

I found this taught pshchological and very English novel at a garage sale and it is exceptionally written. Intriguing and not for the squemish. On a coincidence I late found out that this one of my favorite authors real names for the pseudonym of Campbell Armstrong. Never know what you will find sometimes.

Grade 5 Up-While Mark Twain is most often identified with his childhood home on the Mississippi, he wrote many of his enduring classics during the years he lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He had come a long way from Hannibal when he focused his irreverent humor on medieval tales, and wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The hit on the head that sent protagonist Hank Morgan back through 13 centuries did not affect his natural resourcefulness. Using his knowledge of an upcoming eclipse, Hank escapes a death sentence, and secures an important position at court. Gradually, he introduces 19th century technology so the clever Morgan soon has an easy life. That does not stop him from making disparaging, tongue-in-cheek remarks about the inequalities and imperfections of life in Camelot. Twain weaves many of the well-known Arthurian characters into his story, and he includes a pitched battle between Morgan's men and the nobility. Kenneth Jay's narration is a mix of good-natured bonhomie for Hank and more formal diction for the arcane Olde English speakers. Appropriate music is used throughout to indicate story breaks and add authenticity to scenes. This good quality recording is enhanced by useful liner notes and an attractive case. Younger listeners may need explanations of less familiar words, and some knowledge of the Knights of the Round Table will be helpful. Libraries completing an audiobook collection of Twain titles will enjoy this nice, but not necessary, abridgement.

Revolution by The Boss

You might wonder what prompted Mark Twain to sidle from "straight" fiction into the realm of outright fantasy. Twain transports a Connecticut shop foreman twelve centuries into the past [and 5 000 kilometres!] to Camelot and Arthur's court. Initially confused and dismayed, Hank Morgan's Yankee practicality is quickly aroused and he becomes a major figure among the panopolied knights. With the title of The Boss, his rank equals The King or The Pope with its uniqueness. His elevation doesn't distract him from a more profound impulse, however. Hank's Yankee roots and wide experience evoke an ambition - nothing less than revolution. He wants to sweep away the monarchy and aristocracy and establish an American-style republic in Arthurian Britain.
Mark Twain's scathing criticism of the sham of hereditary monarchy bolstered by an Established Church makes this among his choicest writings. He resents the condition of a Church which "turned a nation of men into a nation of worms." A fervent believer in individual freedom, Twain uses Hank to voice his disdain of Britain's royalty. It's no more than might be expected of a man who boasted of but one ancestor - who sat on the jury that executed Charles I. Hank knows revolutions never succeed when implemented from above. Revolution be achieved only when the individual's attitude changes from meek acceptance to
self assertion. Hank's method reaches people through clandestine schools and factories, publication of a newspaper and establishment of a telephone system. These new forms of manufacture and communication become the foundation by which Hank expects to abolish the ancient, mis-named, chivalric tradition. Does he change the course of history?
Twain relocates the roots of American democracy from the heart of the frontier yeoman farmer to the brain of the urban industrial worker. Here the man of wide, practical experience shows how to survive compared to those with a formal education. Hank has a simple ambition - establishment of a republic - but utilizes a broad spectrum of ideas to bring it about. He would gladly replace the Established Church of Rome with his own Presbyterian ideals, but is aware that it would be swapping one evil for another. "Each man should select his own religion, or make one" he contends. Yet, finally, it is this dread force that impairs his desire for change. The final sequence stands as a peer to the biblical Armageddon, Twain wallowing in a frightful bloodletting unseen in any of his other works.
Mark Twain contrasts the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution with the centuries of slavery, serfdom, and poverty that killed countless more people than that spasm of excising of aristocracy. What else spurred him to write of human rights with such passion? He had written of slavery before, but this book is especially wrathful in describing the "peculiar institution" eliminated in his homeland but a generation before. He forces the king to experience the slave's condition, a form of degradation he would have all aristocrats endure. Every feature of the human condition is examined in this timeless treasure. He challenges you to follow his gaze, considering whether today's societies, monarchical or not, will endure the scrutiny.

Works on every level

As with all of Mark Twain's work this book works on two very different levels. The first of course is a simple adventure story the second is a bitingly satiric work that unmasks many of the hypocracies of "conventional wisdom".

I have to believe that most of his readers of his time (and ours) did not understand his underlying messages regarding society and its institutions. For me, it was hard to miss the way he unmasked the church, the state and society as a whole. I had to laugh out loud at some of the ways he managed to expose the absurdities of government and religion.

This book is a quick read and is immensely satisfying if the reader takes the time to follow Twain's logic to its natural conclusions.

Killer classic...Serious Message with Big, Big Humor!

What a great novel! Twain is wonderfully funny, yet his scathing social commentary concerning his own times are as serious as a heart attack.

When a Connecticut Yankee gets sent back in time to King Arthur's Court, he decides his superior knowledge should be used to educate such an "ignorant race." Of course, we all know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and if I didn't know better, I would say that the person who coined the phrase did so after finishing this novel. The story's main character, Hank Morgan, is a likeable, if not laughable character, yet as most of us already know: absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once technology gets on a roll, the beast of civilization takes off running and Morgan cannot pull in the reigns. Total disaster ensues (incase you had not already guessed).

This was a fun read and a look at a problem that is still very much alive today. Too much civilization can be like a disease, especially when those who are working to spread it find that they are doing it for reasons other than altruism.

Also, do you remember the scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Indiana Jones whips out his gun to shoot the sword-wielding Sultan? That scene was surely lifted from this very book!

Trust me, this is a novel for thought, but one that will not bore you. Twain was a master and this is perhaps my favorite of his novels. Very highly recommended.

A Victoria melodrama, not social satire like Ms. Mapp.

Daisy is a lovely, young society girl, outgoing and popular with men. She has just decided to accept the (obviously) approaching offer of marriage from one titled beaux, and she is the envy of all at making such a suitable match.

Her joy is compounded with the news that her aunt would be arriving home after a year spent traveling abroad to recover from a personal tragedy. Daisy simply adores her aunt, a woman only 10 years older than Daisy but who had taken Daisy in and raised her after the death of her parents.

The aunt arrives in London and learns just to whom Daisy is about to become engage. The aunt is horrified (for reasons unknown to the rest of society) and sets out to prevent the marriage. For silly Victorian reasons, the aunt decides that the best way to accomplish this is to pursue the beaux and make him fall in love with her (the aunt).

The majority of the book is spent on the aunt's various stratagems and justifications of the above action - she is a virtuous and decent woman who is only doing this in the best interest of Daisy.

Overall, this was a Victorian melodrama. If you're looking for social satire or the penetrating wit of Miss Mapp or Queen Lucia (as I was), you won't find it in this story.

It's as if someone else wrote a story and published it under E.F. Benson's name. I gave it 5 stars because it is well written, paced, and plotted for the type of story it is. That I don't particularly care for this type of story is a personal issue that I didn't think should be reflected in the rating. It's not the author's/book's fault that I don't like this genre and would have never downloaded it if there were a plot synopsis available.

Another Interesting Benson Novel

While the method that Daisy's aunt uses to resolve a difficult problem may be debatable, Benson's lyrical descriptions are wonderful and worth the read all by themselves. I highly recommend this for readers who are interested in late 19th and early 20th century British novels.
