This “anyone” is not him, not yet, but after a successful first bout with a lymphoma that he expects to come back, someday, for a rematch, he wants to know more about marrow transplant treatments, so he is pleased to be summoned for a consult by Dr. Jay Harrison, a pioneer in the field. What Harrison wants, though, is to hire to Alex as an investigator in something much less scientific -- a blackmail letter that the doctor cannot understand.

It purports to be from someone in his past, someone Harrison remembers well. They met long ago, in the early 1970s, when Harrison was hitchhiking from a Vietnam War protest and Foster was an anti-war army deserter just returned from exile in France. They had shared some politics, some travel, and a little hashish, but what was any of that to threaten Harrison’s position now?

Something is going on here, Alex tells himself, trying to mentally spread these disparate parts out before him just as he would in his day job of fixing Northern European cars. Some other shoe, his marrow tells him, is going to drop. Drop it does, and marrow is what it’s about: Linda Dumars, one of Harrison’s transplant patients is due to have her own marrow reinfused now that her days of intense treatment are over, but the marrow’s been stolen.

A ransom note soon arrives and the clock ticks: each day without her marrow reduces Linda’s chances of survival.

The 1960s counterculture figures strongly in the third appearance of Boston's occasional shamus Alex Glauberman, an auto mechanic (northern European models only) and recovering cancer patient. Local doctor Jay Harrison receives a note requesting a loan in exchange for silence about his cross-country hitchhiking trip and some time he spent in San Francisco during his student days. Before Alex begins to investigate, a sample of bone marrow is stolen from Harrison's clinic, further threatening a cancer patient's life, and considerably more money is demanded for its return. The transaction goes down badly, sending Alex racing to the West Coast to find the blackmailers. Excellent beginner's guide on meditation

Excellent beginner's guide on meditation. I've tried meditation in the past using a web site called HeadSpace but had to stop when I got busy. This book has a mindfulness exercise that is only one minute long which means I really have no excuse not to do this every day. Longer exercises and a 30-day plan is also available in the book if I choose to take it further. I also like how the book includes tips on choosing the type of meditation music, where to meditate/how to create a meditation space, and other useful information for newbies. Overall a great read.

Best book on meditation I've read

I have already read several meditation books, because meditation is not something that you do once and then master it. It's like going to the gym - you have to do it constantly. I always try to improve my meditation skills. After reading this guide, I must say that it stands out from the rest by far.
After an interesting introduction that covers the history of meditation and the connection to buddhism, you learn different meditation exercises, that you can easily apply on your own. Furthermore the author provides great information regarding meditation music and other important factors that can benefit your experience. Overall the book is easy to understand and written in a very supportive tone. I am already into the author's challenge and so far it has helped me big time!

About the Author

André Alexis was born in Trinidad and grew up in Canada. His debut novel, Childhood, won the Books in Canada First Novel Award, the Trillium Book Award, and was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and the Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. His other previous books include Asylum, Beauty and Sadness, Ingrid & the Wolf and, most recently, Pastoral, which was also nominated for the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and was named a Globe and Mail Top 100 book of 2014.

Human? Canine? Meaning of Life? Great novel, great questions. Must Read.

Fifteen Dogs was this week awarded the Giller Prize. The jury said:

What does it mean to be alive? To think, to feel, to love and to envy? André Alexis explores all of this and more in the extraordinary Fifteen Dogs, an insightful and philosophical meditation on the nature of consciousness. It’s a novel filled with balancing acts: humour juxtaposed with savagery, solitude with the desperate need to be part of a pack, perceptive prose interspersed with playful poetry. A wonderful and original piece of writing that challenges the reader to examine their own existence and recall the age old question, what’s the meaning of life?

In a refreshingly short 171 pages, Mr. Alexis packs as much — if not more — existential punch, metaphysical rumination, and philosophical insight as are contained in some novels that are 900 exasperatingly long pages — not to mention any names (you can click here if you must know) — but after having just finished one such behemoth of a fiction, I was delighted, intrigued, moved, enchanted, and challenged by Fifteen Dogs.

I am one of those who believe dogs to be of a higher order than humans. I spend a good portion of my life being companion to dogs who live with others, counting among the beings I love (and have loved) the most not a few canines. Thus, the premise of this novel (the following is from the publisher’s website) —

— I wonder, said Hermes, what it would be like if animals had human intelligence.

— I’ll wager a year’s servitude, answered Apollo, that animals – any animal you like – would be even more unhappy than humans are, if they were given human intelligence.

And so it begins: a bet between the gods Hermes and Apollo leads them to grant human consciousness and language to a group of dogs overnighting at a Toronto vet­erinary clinic. Suddenly capable of more complex thought, the pack is torn between those who resist the new ways of thinking, preferring the old ‘dog’ ways, and those who embrace the change. The gods watch from above as the dogs venture into their newly unfamiliar world, as they become divided among themselves, as each struggles with new thoughts and feelings. Wily Benjy moves from home to home, Prince becomes a poet, and Majnoun forges a relationship with a kind couple that stops even the Fates in their tracks.

— was wonderfully interesting to me. Imbued with the same sort of consciousness as have humans, how would such colors of knowing alter the shades of awareness and behavior already present in dogs? And, too, given these new ways of contemplation and expression, would dogs find their lives improved?

Fifteen Dogs approaches these questions without the assumption that being human is better — which is what won me over, because I think there is some argument that dogs are kinder, smarter, more honest and reliable than are humans. Most touching — for me — my most “a-ha” moment — which was wrought both gently and too, finally, with a bang — was the pointing out of the possibility that it is perhaps in the naming and labeling of emotions and ways of being where the trouble begins, and where both the greatest joys and sorrows are born.

To love before one names it — as happens with infants and animals, the open, full-on, complete trusting and immersion — is a most blessed and beautiful thing. To have to speak of it to give it reality, is, I think, a limitation and a curse. And while I love my reading and my words, well, I also yearn for more in my life of the silent, words-not-required bursting of emotion I have with my dog-friends.

This is a beautiful book, the intricately complicated simplicity of which provokes an examination of one’s assumptions about the nature of reality and consciousness, of the meaning of Life and Love beyond language, outside of language, and how it is we manage — each of us with our own highly individualized frames of reference — to connect, to find agency enough inside our private realities to make the leap outside ourselves to a shared reality. And none of this is done in a portentous, heavy-handed way, but, rather, suggested in the context of a well-told story that made me laugh, cry, and think. This, for example as one of the main dogs, Majnoun, asks the god, Hermes, to explain what love is:

— What you want to know, Majnoun, is not what love means. It means no one thing and never will. What you want to know is what Nira meant when she used the word. This is more difficult, because Nira’s word is like a long journey taken by one woman alone. She read the word in books, heard it in conversations, talked about it with friends and family, Miguel and you. No other being has encountered the word love as Nira has or used it in quite the same ways, but I can take you along Nira’s path.

That (and the paragraph that follows it – which I almost included but I really want you to read this book) is gorgeous, wow, thoughtfulness and literature. Highly recommended.

Lord of the Flies, with dogs

FIFTEEN DOGS recently won its author the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Canada's richest award. Curious, I looked at the first page: "One evening in Toronto, the gods Apollo and Hermes were in the Wheatsheaf Tavern." What is this, the beginning of some joke? Looking further, I saw the story was mostly about dogs, fifteen of them at first, all duly listed in a "Dramatis Canes" cast list at the start. Oh dear, I thought; the last book I read gave me all the whimsy I could handle for a while…. But I was wrong, completely wrong. Just accept the premise, that the gods for a bet endowed a random group of dogs with human intelligence, and you will find yourself enmeshed in a book that is as brutal and thought-provoking as they come, a kind of LORD OF THE FLIES, only with dogs.

Thought-provoking, yes. Alexis calls this an Apologue, a word I had to look up. According to Wikipedia, it is "a brief fable or allegorical story with pointed or exaggerated details, meant to serve as a pleasant vehicle for a moral doctrine or to convey a useful lesson without stating it explicitly." One example they give is George Orwell's ANIMAL FARM which, though entertaining in manner, makes deadly serious political points (as indeed Golding's novel did a decade later). Alexis also moves quickly beyond the stage of entertainment. Of the fifteen dogs released from their animal shelter by Apollo and Hermes, three are afraid to leave the premises, and the rest soon break into murderous quarrels about how to handle their new gifts. It is not long before the fifteen have been reduced to half a dozen. One of the most shocking things is how quickly the so-called gifts of civilization can result in acts of utter brutality.

There are five substantial chapters in this short but dense book; although following a normal timeline, they are more like musical movements than episodes in a narrative. As in a symphony, most of the drama comes early. In the first movement, as I have indicated, the drama is political, about how the first dogs to practice rational argument -- or worse, puns and poetry -- immediately arouse the suspicion of the pack. The second is about two dogs who return to human companionship, but treat their hosts in very different ways; it also tells of the further attrition of the original pack. The third is about the birth of religious faith. In the fourth, and throughout, Alexis deals with the philosophy of language, from the traditional speech of growls and barks, through the new god-given dog language flexible enough to deal with abstract concepts, to some approximation of spoken English. There are echoes here of THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU by HG Welles, though without the Gothic overtones; Alexis is interested in how the acquisition of language changes one's sense of self, for both dogs and humans. The final chapter, both sad and very beautiful, is a meditation on death, happiness, and the purpose of life.

There is a touch of sentiment in these final pages, but Alexis comes to it honestly. He is careful not to anthropmorphize his animals, as most writers of animal stories do. No matter how sophisticated their thought, these creatures remain dogs in all their doggy habits of sniffing genitalia and eating excrement. Much more important is the insight to be gained by looking at human beings through canine eyes. One of the last survivors ponders at length what it means to be human. He cannot fully comprehend how anyone can live a life so limited in taste and smell, and where social structures are so subject to ambiguity and compromise. But we human readers catch glimpses of ourselves in what the dogs reflect, and the view is not always a comfortable one.* I can easily understand the thought of the Giller Prize committee: once FIFTEEN DOGS entered the competition, there simply wasn't anything else in the same ballpark.

Spoiler alert: You will have a tear in your eye by the end of this metaphysical fantasy- more questions than answers, and pets bewildered by your renewed affection. Warning: this book is guaranteed to detonate arguments in book clubs and college dorms. Decades my have past since you read Greek mythology, but recall that their gods were capricious, whimsical, often meddling with the fates of earthly creatures, but also occasionally beneficent...so don't be surprised when you next drop into your favorite watering hole - here, The Wheat Sheaf Tavern at King and Bathurst (Toronto) - if your bearded bar mate downing the suds is really on a different plane, there to observe your behavior and make a wager on the nature of humanity. Among the questions quaffed in this fast moving animal tale are to what extent intelligence is a source of unhappiness. Do words and imagination only confound? Is it better to "think" or to "know" (instinct)? Is collective behavior a 'good' or is it just uniformity? Is a hierarchical order, a "geometry of dominance", a natural good that when challenged only leads to pain and unhappiness? Are we only true to our real nature without gods and governments? If you die with Hope in your heart, with pure loyalty to your master (mate?), can it be said that you were happy? And is love a natural evolution of loyalty? Ultimately - spoiler alert [2] -awareness of our mortality and a gift that allows us to love and be loved in return is the essence of our being - and that says this author cannot be extinguished.

Leslie N. Bank retired from the Baltimore Police Department as a lieutenant after serving for nearly twenty-five years, and now works as a security consultant. Bank graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a master's degree in science. She lives in Columbia, Maryland, with her eight-year-old son.

The timing of this book coming into my life is, like all things, no coincidence. The reality of spirit has become more apparent to me as I grow older,
and to read this truth from such a remarkable writer, Leslie Bank, is a pleasure. Leslie has the courage to relate her personal experiences in order
to teach and encourage others to find meaning in their lives. My random thoughts about being exactly where I'm supposed to be, about suddenly
"saved" from harm without explanation, finally forgiving past hurts, and being increasingly respectful of karma, found validation in this wonderful book. I will read it again, and explore Leslie's numerous recommendations for additional information.

Reading is my hobby and I found Receptivity Project to be one of the best books I have read in a very long time.
I really resonated with the author, I totally connected in so many ways and felt like finally someone sees the world through my eyes.

A book that feels like a letter from a friend.

I've been seeking more and different ways to connect with my spiritual .... I never had a name for it before, but Leslie calls it a guide, so I will use that word. This book is an easy-to-follow guide for tapping in to the messages and energy that we all have. I like the personal stories that Leslie relates. They make the immaterial a bit more concrete. And the intimacy of the stories makes me feel like I'm reading a letter from a friend. I sped through the entire book when I first got it, and now I will go back and try the exercises to see how it all relates to me. Thanks for this guide to be more in tune with my guides!

About the Author
Darrin Mason has worked much of his adult life as a freelance cartoonist (he is an Australian Cartoon Award winner) whose work has appeared in a number of Australian newspapers and magazines (People magazine and The Truth newspaper to name but two) and as a producer at 4BC radio in Brisbane, Australia. He is one hell of a funny guy with a dark sense of humor who spits in the face of political correctness. After all, political correctness does suck the big one. Above all else though, he is a fan of Batman. (The 1960s TV version, the late 1980s/early 1990s Michael Keaton version, and the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale trilogy are the only ones that matter. You can forget the rest).

A satirical parody... an extreme example... 4 1/2 Stars

"The Wicked Witch of the West: Munchkin Killer" is a satirical parody by Darrin Mason. This Kindle e-book was a 169 Kb download (approx. 21 printed pages) and sold for $1.49 at the time of writing this review.

General theme

Dorothy, accidentally kills The Wicked Witch of the East (and you know who's sister)... and now 'you know who' is a tad unhappy. This then is a rather off-beat look at another possible (although highly unlikely), encounter between Dorothy and The Wicked Witch of the West".

Some thoughts on "The Wicked... Munchkin Killer"...

1.) a short, funny parody (at times very funny) that is well written... and in it's own unique style.

2.) it features some modern day weaponry, cameo appearances by some famous (living and dead) persons, and excessive crude and coarse language.

Impression:
A short parody that will be appreciated by only a select few... maybe those who harbor a weird sense of humor (that would be me... lol) and are attuned to those really, really stupid and demented tales like the one found here. Oh, and also those that are not particularly bothered by an abundance of gratuitously used f-bombs. (loss of 1/2 Star)

Hysterical, imaginative, patently adult parody

Let me start off by saying if you're looking for any kind of continuation, prelude, or other such business related to the chidren's Wizard of Oz, please look elsewhere. This is pure adult fun, with the f-bomb tossed around nearly every other sentence. With that said, if you would like a wild, seat of your pants ride in the shoes of the Wicked Witch as she tries to gun down Dorothy, the Tin Man, and all those pesky munchkins, you might just love this book! It is wildly creative, featuring every possible parody, including Harry Potter, Elvis, Jesus, and the master himself (yes, Stephen King). I read this book in record time, grinning from the first to the last sentence. Maybe it was the mood I was in tonight, but this book had me cracking up. My only wish is that Mr. Mason would have included some of his award-winning cartoons (hint, hint).

~~Screw the Yellow Brick Road and much more!~~

An outstanding example of a parody at its finest! One example follows another in this short book which entertained me throughout. A couple of minor spoilers follow.When Dorothy uttered "Screw the yellow brick road" close to the beginning, I knew I was in for a fun ride. And, the reader is privy to the fact that Auntie Em closed the trap door before Dorothy arrived. And, that is the end of a couple of minor spoilers.

The description of Glinda is priceless. Not sure that I have ever read such a succinct description of an alcoholic previously. I had a laugh out loud moment, too, when the Wicked Witch of the West was on the exercise bike. She pedaled with such intensity and strength. All I can say is that the ride was worth her pedaling.

Must check on other books by this author. Always good to get a genuine chuckle...

Most highly recommended.

Konx Om Pax is one of Crowley’s earliest occult publications, and it has often been found to be less than illuminating to new students of his work, despite its subtitle of "Essays in Light." To lighten the burden of the first-time reader and to introduce its first facsimile edition, a few words are in order .

The mystification begins with the often-misspelled title of this curious collection of essays. It is taken from a barbarous phrase spoken in the Eleusinian mysteries, konx ompax, which was picked up by the originators of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and incorporated into their Neophyte initiation ceremony; the titles of the officers in the latter ceremony are also taken from the Eleusinia. Crowley underwent the Neophyte ritual in November 1898; in it he learned that these mystic words were the Greek cognates of the Egyptian "Khabs am Pekht," here translated as "Light in Extension"—a bit of good mysticism but dubious etymology in keeping with the intellectual habits of the Golden Dawn’s magical founder, S. L. Mathers, who, as Crowley twits, "will borrow any required properties." Nevertheless Crowley took the derivation at face value and in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" goes on to identify KONX with the "LVX of the Brethren of the Rosy Cross."

The problem is already apparent: Crowley’s "baulking erudition," as noted by his friend Louis Wilkinson, forms a severe block to the understanding of his message. Many of the references in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" would have been unintelligible to contemporary readers other than the minuscule number of Golden Dawn initiates, and the morass of arcane allusion only deepens as one turns the pages. An additional difficulty is that, at the time of the composition of Konx Om Pax in 1906-7, Crowley had little experience and less sympathy with prose; his interests, bar a few odd essays, had been confined to poetry, outside of which he had never previously attempted to convey his own evolving occult philosophy. The writing of this book marks a turning point in Crowley’s career as an author and teacher; he is still in a sense his own audience, as witness the many private jokes and references to details of his life, but at the same time he is trying to bring others int! o the Light that he has seen.

The solution to the difficulties of Konx Om Pax is not far off. The last twenty years have seen a considerable number of books published on the Tarot, the Qabalah and the Golden Dawn’s history and rituals. Many of Crowley’s books, including his Confessions —vital to comprehending his life and works—are now widely available. Armed with these weapons, it is only a matter of time and some small effort before a dedicated student sees the way through the obscurities of Crowley’s style; indeed, part of the beauty of his books is that he engages a reader’s attention with the certainty that there is something behind what he writes. It would be a pity to be deprived of the pleasure of discovering for oneself the mysteries and the mirth hidden therein.

For these reasons it was decided to make Konx Om Pax available again in facsimile, and leave the work of deciphering the text to the earnest inquirer...

I will be buried with this book!

My favorite book!A good familiarity with late 19th & early 20th century occult personalities, (especially the Golden Dawn) is very helpful. "The rites of modern occult magic" by Francis King, (also published under other titles) is a good primer. A scream from front to back. Crowley's biting satire is in top form here. This also contains my favorite selections of his poetry, esp "The disappointed artist" & "The suspicious earl".Guarenteed to offend almost everyone! This is a must for Crowleyites.

Mandatory reading

Read this wonderful, confounding book. Crowley isn't yet in full humbug mode when writing this... he's young and impetuous, full of rage and all the delight of a man straight out of college. He's not setting down orders, he's not giving you instructions, he's having some fun telling you some of his ideas. "Thien Tao" and "The Wake World" are the most important pieces in the book. "Thien Tao" is Crowley's mutant autobiography up to that point. He casts himself as an ancient Chinese sage, and explains the fall of the Golden Dawn in an amazingly subtle, very sharp satirical voice. "The Wake World" is a fairy tale about the progress of the student of Qabalah. It is reminiscent of "The Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosencreuz". This copy was a 1990 reprint, very lush and warm.

I am thoroughly impressed with the material he presents and pleasantly entertained with how he puts it all together. He remains humble and is not preaching anything. Merely pointing out things for others to see. All of the topics he writes about are something everyone of us should take the time to investigate for the sake of our own sovereignty in this crazy world- if we even have any left. He may present things that are uncomfortable for some who are new to this aspect of reality but if you keep an open mind it will not take long for you to see that he's reporting on some very real very important things. Keep up the amazing work and thank you for your service Isaac!

Beautiful guide to heal yourself and others.

I first learned of Abby Wynne through Instagram (@abbynrghealing). I love her uplifting and positive posts. She is a Shamanic Psychotherapist, Energy Healer, Spiritual Teacher and Author from Dublin, Ireland. When I realized she had a book coming out through Hay House on Energy Healing, I could not wait to get my hands on it!

Energy Healing: Unlock Your Potential as a Healer and Bring Healing into Your Everyday Life by Abby Wynne is a beautiful guide to learn how to use energy healing on yourself and others. I read the book in its entirety for the purpose of this review, but I am now back to the beginning to work each exercise step by step. This is not the type of book that you read and put back on the shelf. It is a guide to a healthy, healing way of life.

Abby explains what energy healing is in easy to understand language, and her book is so full of wonderful information. She explains the different types of healing modalities and practitioners. She also shares her journey into healing. I always appreciate when authors are willing to share their personal story. It makes her writing even more genuine, because she is not only teaching us, she is living it.

She guides us in creating a "space of love." I just love that term! She teaches us how to center and ground ourselves. One of my biggest issues is feeling others' emotions so deeply that I take them on. I appreciate being empathic, but it can be draining to pick up negative energies so easily. Abby teaches us how to visualize a protective bubble around ourselves to shield the energies we don't want to let in. And it works!

Abby teaches us how to "pull down" Universal Life Force Energy into us for the purpose of healing. We also learn clearing, expanding, mindfulness, and how to bring healing to ourselves, family, the office and more. And as if all of this isn't enough (and believe me, I haven't nearly covered it all!), she also provides resources at the end for even more information.

I highly recommend Energy Healing. Thank you Abby for this wonderful book. I am now incorporating Energy Healing as part of my spiritual practice. I am grateful for your wisdom and for your generosity in sharing it all with us!

This is a 5 star +++++++++++++++ book!!!

I've read several books about energy healing, but I must say that Abby Wynne's book is the most down-to-earth reading I've read so far. With her light writing style I sat and wished that I had read her book first! The way she writes makes it so easy to understand what energy is all about.
I have already used her guided meditations and watched some videoes she has made, before I read this book, and her gentle loving energy and humour just flows thrue the book.

I bought the book as an e-book first, but some books you just NEED to have physically in your hand, so I've ordered the book and expect to recieve it in the mail next week :)
