"The beautifully depicted signs, symbols, and objects in this work by astrologer Bartlett (Tarot Bible) illustrate 100 attempts to make sense of the world and our place in it. They are divided equally among chapters that cover "The Natural World," "The Divine World," "Signs and Systems," and "The Mystic World." The introduction explains what symbols are and their importance throughout history. It outlines the coverage in the book and discusses the "catalog pages" that illustrate groups of 12 symbols from various traditions. The entries that follow generally portray on a two-page spread each, an item and its historyâ??handprints on cave walls in Argentina, the breastplate of Aaron, Vitruvian Man. Several entries address a type of item, such as tefillin (phylacteries worn by Jews), playing cards, or Fibonacci series. In many cases the book goes into extra detail. The summary on the Hindu elephant-headed god Ganesha, for example, is accompanied by information on Kangi-ten, a Japanese pair of gods that are male and female elephants, and followed by pages on Hindu deities generally. Entries are accompanied by vivid reproductions of artworks. The accompanying captions provide basic facts on the items, though the descriptions are at times quite general rather than offering thorough explanations on the particular object shown. Since the spreads are fascinating but brief, some may wish for further reading advice that is unfortunately lacking. Still, this is a wonderful browse and a great jumping-off point for reports on history, mythology, and religion. gesture and symbol to better understand what they reference

What a lovely book! As an artist, I am constantly looking to increase my awareness of line, gesture and symbol to better understand what they reference, and or how they might be perceived by my audience. This book has been on my studio desk for weeks now, and I often find myself drawn into its pages in between tasks. Each entry goes into great detail, but not so much that I am overwhelmed at any time -- I think the pages chocked full of images helps considerably. I've referenced the spread on birds already a dozen times, and it has prompted further interest and research into some of the specific tributes of the various species included.

I found this book to be most interesting with all the information and bright pictures. It makes a wonderful read or gift for the special someone in your life. Devil-Chasing Medal, also known as the Saint Benedict medal, this decoration is worn by Catholics as a protective amulet. It is believed to have immense power against evil. Since the fifth teen century, the reverse side of the medal carries the Latin words Vode retro Santana- "Step back Satan"- and other magical formulae used to ward off evil.

Kept me laughing from page to page! A really funny read!

So far I've been loving this series. I can't seem to put them down! The story just gets better, the characters get funnier, and the antics get crazier. Seriously, if you want a great and funny read, grab this book.

To dig into this book just a little bit without giving away the juicy details, Pat heads to the dentist in this episode - and he seems to be on to something here. I thought I was the only one that though dentist tools were actually torture devices. Pat seems to know all about them just as well as anyone that's been to a dentist. I also love how he mentions the confusion he has from the dentist asking you questions while your mouth is full of hardware. I've always thought that was weird - and when he mentions it in this book, I couldn't help but to laugh. I also love how the dentist seems to understand him while he's trying to talk with cleaning tools in his mouth - that's another great mystery of the universe that I've also witnessed!

As with the previous books, there's plenty of "whoa, did he just say that!" moments in this book - and they kept me laughing nearly page to page until the book was finished. Again, if you want something that's a great and really funny read - as well as something that's new, fresh and unique, pick this book up now and give it a go. You won't regret it!

Hatt’s adventure drives on with a fun story that will peak your imagination and curiosity.

Let me start out with the fact that I absolutely hate going to the dentist office. I believe that dentist are inherently evil and get entertainment in torturing their patients. Every time I go to the dentist, I am nagged about flossing (even though I floss 2-3 times a day), and then she proceeds to dig through my mouth with her pick ripping out my gums. This book was quite a bit of fun to read and provided plenty of laughs. The American is quickly becoming my new favorite character as he is absolutely ridiculous and full of horrible ideas. His theory on getting a girlfriend and then dumping her is absolutely preposterous, but not at all out of the ordinary for people these days. His lack of respect for relationships shows how crazy our society has truly become. Hatt’s series is absolutely phenomenal so far, I look forward to reading more.

I can honestly say that his was one of the best in it

I purchased this book to support a friend who had a story in it. (Fortunately, I can honestly say that his was one of the best in it.) As (almost) always with an anthology, it is a mixed bag, but in this case I can honestly say that there is more good than bad. Some of the stories are creepy, some are funny; some are sci-fi, some are fantasy, some are horror; some were short and sweet, and others left me confused. For the price of the ebook, it's definitely worth a look.

There's no mention about the 108 year cycle that the RCs use. And also the figures in inches were formulated without the exactness if today; how can there be prophecies unless these are caused by the logical fallacies (and dark forces behind) of Secret Societies

About the Author
TIM BURKETT, PhD, is Guiding Teacher of the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also a licensed psychologist and director of a large mental health agency. He was a student of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and later of Dainin Katagiri Roshi, in whose lineage he is a dharma heir.

Like Sharing a Cup of Tea with Shunryu Suzuki

For anyone who wants to know what Shunryu Suzuki was really like, Tim Burkett's "Nothing Holy About It" is a great place to start. It is the best book since David Chadwick's "Crooked Cucumber" to paint such an intimate portrait of America's most influential Zen teacher. Tim Burkett was there with Suzuki Roshi for the Palo Alto talks that led to "Zen Mind, Beginners Mind". In fact, as a young Stanford student, Burkett helped organize the study group that made those seminal talks possible. He was also there when Suzuki founded Tassajara and at the legendary "Zenefit" where Suzuki got up on stage to thank Janis Joplin for her for amazing performance. Burkett and editor Wanda Isle bring all of these great moments in American Zen to life - and many, much more personal moments as well. It's a delight to watch as Tim's beloved Zen master helps him make sense of his college-age existentialist struggles over a cup of hot tea; and then join them at a roadside ice cream shop as Tim introduces a wide-eyed Suzuki Roshi to his very first chocolate sundae. The book would be well worth the price if all it did was bring the reader up close and personal with Suzuki Roshi. But it does so much more. "Nothing Holy" also provides a simple, yet profound, guide to Tim's own teachings. As the Guiding Teacher at Minnesota Zen Center, Tim applies the principles he learned from Suzuki and the other great teacher in his life, Dainin Katagari, as well as his own insights gained as a psychologist and social worker. His book captures those teachings in a practical, step by step approach to Zen that is kind, compassionate and grounded in the belief that true Zen is about gently and fully embracing the life you have right in front of you. The author maintains throughout that there is "nothing holy" about the Zen he learned from Suzuki Roshi. While it may not be holy, there is certainly something very valuable, satisfying, and enjoyable about it. The same can be said for Mr Burkett's wonderful guide to the Zen of being just who you are.

Very Satisfying

First a disclosure: I’m a friend of the author’s. But I will give you an honest report, as is appropriate for a book about a way of sincerity. This is a book about Tim Burkett’s life on the path of Zen Buddhism as it illuminates the path for others to learn from. The book mixes copious and wonderful stories from his experiences with his famous teacher, Suzuki Roshi, from Tim’s own life as a Zen student and teacher, and from the Buddhist and allied traditions to create a well-woven narrative that is simultaneously teaching, autobiography, and remembrance of another.

I’m not a Zen adherent so there are aspects of the book that I didn’t resonate with. But nonetheless I felt myself elated to be reading it. Mainly it was because as I read the first few chapters I felt like I was reading a book unlike any I had read before. In fact, it wasn’t that the book was so unique—in it’s themes, say—but that reading it didn’t feel like reading a book at all. It felt like a direct encounter with a person. The book is the testament of someone who has digested a way of life so thoroughly that there feels like little Zen teaching in it that isn’t carried in Tim’s own voice and personality. You sense—though it’s embarrassing to even say it outright—an achievement of a life. And it was immensely refreshing and heartening to bear witness to it.

It’s also an achievement of an editor. The three themes are woven beautifully together so that the multiple purposes of the book are in harmony with each other pretty near completely.

These are the pleasures that readers will derive. In addition, it is a very penetrating presentation of the Zen way, particularly in a contemporary American context. I think both Zen students and those unfamiliar with Zen will learn a great deal from this book.

The subtitle of "Nothing Holy About It, "Being Just Who You Are" could be a useful description of Tim Burkett's own life. Coming of age at Stanford
University in the thick of the hippy era, the book tells how Tim left his family script, and took another path. Along the path he met the now famous Zen Roshi, Shunryu Suzuki, recently arrived from Japan.. The book tells stories of Tim's close encounters with Suzuki who became his teacher. Later , as a student of another Japanese Zen master, Katagiri Roshi Tim was ordained as one of the first American Zen priests .
This is a story filled with insights into the hearts and minds of two founding Japanese teachers of Zen in America who were Tim's teachers. The prose is exquisite, it sweeps the reader along: diamond clear, lyrical, inspired, it evokes inner stillness.
While about Zen Buddhist teachers and teachings I experienced the book as a universal story: the story of spiritual call, and of seekers who hear and follow that call and persist in walking the path. I loved the book, loved the stories, loved the lyricism of the prose.

It took two minutes for Clive to clear the stack of celebrity door mats that had fallen blocking the car door. We leapt out to find the two minutes was enough time for the four by four driver to have fled. According to witnesses, the driver wore a complete Batman outfit and was cheered down the road where he flagged a taxi down and disappeared.

Don't Misss This Pearl

James Wilson has written an incredibly provocative, challenging and well thought-out book. In his own unique and
pleasantly conversational style, he takes on, no holds barred, issues that are at the very heart of this bewildering process
we call life. Wisely avoiding identifying his book as any type of scientific treatise, he offers up ideas that are deeply
grounded in logic, reason, and based on personal experiences that could in themselves form the basis for a fascinating
movie. In fact I may plagiarize them and formulate a screenplay. Just kidding. If you are seeking another formulaic self-help
manual that will be forgotten in a week, Wilson's work isn't for you. If you are willing to be challenged to be the most honest, self-honest,
realistic, truly loving and growth-oriented human being that you can be, then GET THIS BOOK, ASAP. It is a jewel of wisdom and inspiration.

I finally found the answers...

My name is Justin Lieberman and I am a 22 year old young man living in the San Fernando Valley. As a 22 year old I am constantly searching for answers, most importantly about life. How can I become a better man? What is a man? What is wrong? What is right? "The Man Book" truly gave me an honest perspective on life and has opened up many doors for my future. For many years I have been holding back to do what I truly love to do. Ive been procrastinating, coming up with irrelevant reasonings "that hold me back from my dreams." This book was the perfect "answer" for myself, and all of my friends struggling to find reasoning in the world. This book is true brilliance and should be a required read for every young arrogant male that is going through college or even high school. If you are a young male aspiring to learn the responsibilities of becoming and man, I suggest you read "The Man Book."

A Book For Everyone

This is a beautifully written, carefully constructed book that surprised me on every page. The style is very unique, but I acclimated quickly and really couldn't put it down. Every page challenges one to "take stock"
of oneself and determine whether there are actions and ways of living that can make life richer and more rewarding for everyone and every thing. I feel I now look at my place in the world with a more careful eye.

About the Author
Antoine Volodine is the primary pseudonym of a French writer who has published 20 books under this name, several of which are available in English translation, including Minor Angels, Naming the Jungle, and Writers. He also publishes under the names Lutz Bassmann (We Monks and Soldiers) and Manuela Draeger (In the Time of the Blue Ball). Most of his works take place in a post-apocalyptic world where members of the "post-exoticism" writing movement have all been arrested as subversive elements. Together, these works constitute one of the most inventive, ambitious projects of contemporary writing.

J.T. Mahany is a graduate of the masters program in literary translation at the University of Rochester. He is currently translating several books by the enigmatic and intriguing French author, Antoine Volodine.

What is post-exoticism - will Volodine help us?

So what is post-exoticism?

Maybe I could attempt to explain it like this. Literature is art, right? Painting is art, right? I own a very large painting (84 cm x 170 cm) by Tjariya (Nungalka) Stanley from Ernabella (pictured). If I was to describe to you what it represents, without you seeing it, I’d have a minimal chance of explaining beyond, colours, dots, size, and materials. If I was to explain that it was the story of “the older sister going a long way to get her younger sister and bring her back” as the artist has explained, you’d still have no idea. If I spoke of Wingellina and Docker River and inma, I’d confuse you even more. But it is still art right? It still evokes emotions, takes you on a journey when being viewed, even if you do not understand the detailed imagery or even the representation of the shapes. Does the fact that Tjariya (Nungalka) Stanley was originally taught batik by Daisy Baker following her visit to Indonesia in the 1970’s add more depth to your understanding of the painting? All relevant or irrelevant?

That’s how I explain post-exoticism as a literary art form, I don’t.
