A smart guide to looking at your health holistically.

I have followed Kimberly Snyder since her first book, The Beauty Detox Solution: Eat Your Way to Radiant Skin, Renewed Energy and the Body You've Always Wanted. When I read that book, it honest-to-God changed my life. I was pregnant with my second child--so, not a good time for radical dietary changes--but I did manage to make a few adjustments to my diet that helped me legitimately FEEL better on a day-to-day basis. For example, I ate less dairy, I ate fruit on an empty stomach, I made sure to eat veggies before each meal, and I upped my green vegetable intake considerably. Because of her recommendations, my last two pregnancies were heartburn-free!

Despite the fact that Snyder's second book, The Beauty Detox Foods: Discover the Top 50 Beauty Foods That Will Transform Your Body and Reveal a More Beautiful You, didn't really wow me, I was very eager to read her third book, The Beauty Detox Power. I didn't know what to expect, honestly. Would it be more of the same? Could she really add anything new to the conversation she started in Beauty Detox Solution?

Well, within the first few pages of this book, I knew it was something different, something special even. This book is much more personal than her other two. She still follows the same format of sharing client stories throughout in order to illustrate her points, yes. But she also adds a few of her own--stories about struggling to fit in, about feeling neglected and misunderstood, and about how she ultimately was able to find her way to optimum mental, physical, and emotional health. I think there can be a tendency, when you look at her, to think, "Oh, this woman has it all figured out, and she probably always has." But Snyder proves that that hasn't been the case. She has had to find her way just like the rest of us. I appreciated her willingness to share that, and it helped me stay open to her message.

And her message is powerful! There is so much good information here. The book is divided into six sections called Power Alignment Shifts. Each section is broken up into two or more chapters. Each Power Alignment Shift section has a fancy subtitle, but, basically, the sections talk about:

1) thinking about your health holistically
2) recognizing and then harnessing the power of your thoughts
3) dealing with food cravings
4) understanding your body's chakras
5) understanding the importance of healthy relationships
6) recipes

I especially enjoyed the first and fourth sections. I so loved how she started this book off with an honest discussion of what it means to be healthy. It is so easy to get caught up in counting calories and obsessing--OBSESSING!--over every little nutrient or carb or fat or how much in, how much out. But, in the end, we are just using food as yet another means to be cruel to ourselves. It's sad. And completely counterproductive. I couldn't agree more with Snyder when she says, "If you love your body and nourish it from a place of love, instead of just plotting and planning how to make it skinnier, your body will respond with an increased amount of vitality, energy, and health...and you'll actually realize far superior--and sustainable--results with your weight and beauty."

I will also add that Snyder's breakdown of the chakras is one of the most simple, straightforward, yet informative explanations I've encountered. It was very well done, and I know I'm going to be referencing that section of the book a lot.

I only have two complaints. First, Snyder's face is ALL OVER this book. Truly, she is everywhere. I finally broke down and counted all of her selfies; there are 48 pictures of her in a 300-page book--50 if you count the front and back cover. So that averages out to be a smiling Snyder every six pages. It all got to be a bit...much. And the worst part is that all the headshots were a distraction from her very good message.

Second, while I loved that she had so many footnotes throughout the book, when I went to look more closely at her sources, I only found this message at the back: "A full list of references used in the writing of this book can be found at [her website]." Well, if you go to the website, there is no clear path to finding the references. Plus, you are bombarded immediately with pop-up after pop-up. I don't know if the book I received doesn't have references because I received an advance copy, but I really wish this aspect of the book had been more transparent.

Regardless, I thought this was a wonderful book. Snyder packed so much information into Beauty Detox Power--information that really added something powerful, insightful, and unique to the oft-discussed topic of health. She has motivated me to think about my body and my mind differently, and I really think I will be a better, healthier person because of it.

60 great recipes-great differentiation between food intuition and food cravings-great advice on communicating and living better

This is not the first book I've read by Kimberly Snyder. And I read a lot of books on detox and use my kitchen like a spa lab This is probably going to be the longest review I've ever written because this is a great spa-type book and you might really benefit from it..

As a former ICU nurse and a food-lover and recipe hound I went to the 60 recipes first. The recipes are vegan and gluten free and low fat so they are all vegetable based. My first try was the Shakti Power Salad made by using lemon juice to soften raw broccoli florets and shredded carrots and diced cucumbers with a tahini dressing. It is outstanding. I've been eating kale salads and my skin just glows which at 60 years old is no small feat. When I stop eating kale and juicing raw vegetables my skin goes to dull and grey in a week, so if it is that dramatic at my age I can imagine how much beauty is being lost on young people. She recommends the green smoothie daily as I've learned is the best for "the glow." Gluten free is addressed using spaghetti squash or gluten free pasta. The Mashed Caulilflower with Mushroom and Garlic Gravy is really good. The umami layered (protein) flavor of the mushroom and garlic along with the earthy flavor of the cauliflower is better than the starchy real thing is with rare exception (potatoes and meat gravy) and that is saying a lot. In short, there is a range of recipe.

There is a lot of great advice based on chakras from India and letting go of putting numbers on everything from calorie count to weight and using intuition to choose foods. I think we've gotten away from intuition (listening to your inner voice) which is different than food cravings and she nicely makes that important difference.

This is a lovely book, with a very broad range of advice from the power of affirmations to emotional freedom to letting your ego go

Another informative, interesting book about detoxing your emotional relationship to food

I have Kimberly Snyder's second book The Beauty Detox Foods: Discover the Top 50 Beauty Foods That Will Transform Your Body and Reveal a More Beautiful You and just love it, and so I was excited to receive an advance copy of this new book as part of Amazon's Vine program since I was going to buy it anyway. Whether you're new to Kimberly's philosophies or already familiar with them, you'll find a lot of new, interesting information in this third book of hers. The overall focus is not so much on specific recipes, but rather on cultivating happiness and beauty in all aspects of our lives.

As you can see, the book is divided into six main sections, and each one starts with an introductory segment that outlines what's to come in that section's chapters. Whereas the The Beauty Detox Foods: Discover the Top 50 Beauty Foods That Will Transform Your Body and Reveal a More Beautiful You focused more on what foods were extra-nourishing and what nutrients they contained, in this new book, Kimberly brings her yoga background more into the forefront by discussing the whole person and our relationships to food and eating. As she writes in the introduction to the book, "It would have been much easier for me to write another straight food and diet book. . . . [But]True power is when you connect to the wholeness that is you, and there is synergy between the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your being, and complete alignment between your thoughts [ . . .], core beliefs [ . . .], words [ . . .], and actions" (xi-xii).

I wasn't expecting this focus on overall nutrition and holistic health, but I really liked reading this book since it allowed me to explore my own often-troubled relationship to food in a more profound way than another diet/recipe book would have. Throughout the book, there are sections for you to journal and to use affirmations, so just be sure that this is something you'd be comfortable with before purchasing this.

The formatting of this book is also really gorgeous, with lovely full-color photographs. Kimberly also includes text boxes with stories about her clients, and I love how her main text ends before each text box appears so that you're not interrupted mid-sentence. (It's one of my pet peeves when I'm reading a book or magazine where they include separate story/text boxes in the middle of the main article, so that you have to leave off reading what you were in order to read the text box. :-) )

As for the recipes, they are organized in two mini tables of contents -- one that groups recipes together based on what chakras they help nourish and one that groups recipes together based on what cravings they will help satisfy. As with Kimberly's previous two books, all of the recipes are vegan and use whole foods. Since I just got the book, I have only made the Chocolate and Sprout Love Shakes, but it was super tasty, and, based on my experiences with the other book of hers that I already own, can tell that they will be delicious.

Explore this book with an open mind, and I'm sure you'll discover much about your own relationship with food and eating. Namaste!
