HIDING IN HIBBING, by David O'Malley

In January of 1971, four young guys who knew nothing about music convinced an entire town they were a hot rock and roll band on the brink of stardom. A lie that crazy could only go one direction… off the rails!

20-year-old Arthur "Ziggy" Zigmond has ideas. Lots of ideas. But no one wants to hear them. Especially the three guys he works with. When they set out from Chicago in a VW bus to shoot a local beer commercial "as a favor to some guy who owes a big favor to some other guy" they find themselves snowbound and stranded by a raging blizzard in Hibbing, Minnesota – former hometown of the legendary Bob Dylan. In an effort to snag free motel rooms, Joe Studebaker, their maverick ad agency producer, passes his motley camera team off as a hot new rock-and-roll band hiding in Hibbing until their upcoming "world debut" on The Ed Sullivan Show. This loopy charade sets off a chain of events that leaves the cash-strapped townsfolk spinning in their wool socks - and the local teen girls in an adolescent frenzy. When Janey Olsen, a 19-year-old of uncommon grace, catches Ziggy's eye, she abruptly flips his world upside down. Beset by recent tragedy, Janey is also hiding a deep secret of her own… and an unfulfilled dream that remains impossibly out of her reach. Deception, longing and desperation have never been so outrageously hilarious… and so equally heartbreaking.

Hiding in Hibbing is a wildly careening look at the end of a decade spun by political turmoil and social upheaval; the turning point of cultural chaos that defined who we were then and what we would ultimately become.

From the Inside Flap
PRAISE FOR HIDING IN HIBBING

  • "I had never even heard of Hibbing, Minnesota.  But I'm grateful David O'Malley had.  It inspired him to write a totally absorbing book.  For four consecutive days, his Hiding in Hibbing and its wonderful characters have kept me happily involved and thoroughly entertained."  ~  Carl Reiner, award-winning writer, director and comedy legend.   Author of I Remember Me and Enter Laughing
  • "This is the comedy that Garrison Keillor and Bob Dylan might have written if they had met at a party and both drank too many margaritas. Hiding in Hibbing has wonderfully flawed, all-too-real characters who just want a tiny sip of that elixir called fame.  A deft and funny novel." ~ Pierce Gardner, screenwriter of Dan In Real Life
  • "David O'Malley has written a smart, funny page-turner full of quirky characters in a unique, colorful setting.  Fans of Carl Hiaasen will love Hiding in Hibbing." ~ James L. Conway, author of Dead and Not So Buried
  • "Hiding in Hibbing is terrific!  Tightly crafted, informed and funny.  Absolutely on target.  Great work!  I'm green with envy!" ~ Jerry Bowles, author of A Thousand Sundays
  • "The flow and detail made it a pleasure to read.  I loved harking back to the 1970s and revisiting characters of that era.  I may have even hung out and partied with some of those dudes back in the day.  A truly fun story!"  ~ Barry Livingston, author of The Importance of Being Ernie

A Cold Day In Hell
By April Kelly
Farce, romp, screwball comedy...whatever label you want to stick on this debut novel, Hiding In Hibbing is well worth your time. If you were alive in 1971, but too stoned to recall the details, laugh out loud at David O'Malley's refresher course in a fascinating, on-the-verge time, brought to life through the antics of four hapless guys who only want to cadge a free hotel room in a snow storm. By the time they realize their little white lie has become a downhill-rolling snowball, picking up human freight as it careens toward the inevitable collision, it's too late for them to do anything other than hang on for the ride. I recommend you pick up this book and join them.

You will love this book.
By Craig
From the opening tragedy to the perfect ending, O'Malley kept me totally enthralled-captivated really-by the flow of events in between. He perfectly captures the foibles that make humans so entertaining; self importance, self pity, self delusion, self aggrandizement and the hunger for the famous, among many others.
O'Malley makes the storm enclosed world of four young men trapped by their desire to not freeze to death in their VW van come to life in marvelous and hilarious detail. The cast of citizens of Hibbing are a perfect support for the story.
I loved this book and you will too.

Fun from start to finish
By Laurie
What a fun read! I wasn't sure where this adventure was going to take me ... and was thrilled that amongst all the zaniness, there was real heart-and-soul. Bits of advertising history, bits of music history, bits of real life all woven together to make a completely charming escapade.
