*Who Is Allah* is brimming with fascinating, inspiring, and informative stories and examples of how the name Allah lives for people in multiple contexts. This is an encyclopedic book and a dynamic overview of a variety of Muslim experiences.
Lawrence traverses examples ranging from the *basmala* (the opening invocation, “In the Name of God Full of Compassion, Ever Compassionate”); to prayer beads, from Muhammad to Christopher Hitchens; from jihad (and its advocates bin Laden and Sayyed Qutb) to a handful of prominent Sufi teachers including al-Ghazali, Muzaffer Ozak, Bawa Muhaiyuddeen ; from theologians to poets, from the Supreme Name, to videogames; explaining the most beautiful Names as Light in the teaching of Bawa Muhaiyaddeen; and the politics of English-language Qur’an translations. Here we encounter the eccentric figures such as Fethullah Gulen, Harun Yahya, Bediuzzaman Nursi, and Ahmed Hulusi. Lawrence even provides many examples that identify the Supreme Name.
Ultimately as Lawrence explains, he is sounding in three registers: sociological, existential, and skeptical. Sociologically one asks Who Allah—and why? Existentially, one asks what is Allah and how is He sought? Skeptically, one asks where and when. This includes asking “when does the quest end?”—especially since He is Beyond naming.

Who is Bruce Lawrence? The only person – scholar, public intellectual and, as he calls himself, “Abrahamic pluralist” – who could write Who is Allah? In the age of hypergeneralization and hyperspecialization, when most of what passes for informed opinion is produced by superficial generalists or, on the other extreme, narrow specialists, Lawrence is unique. Behind this book is over four decades of his academic and heart-to-heart engagement with Muslims, across past and current cultural terrains, in settings as varied as India and the United States, and always with informed insight and inquisitive attention to details that many others miss. For a book about God, Who is Allah? is inimitable because, above all, it is humanizing. It is really a book about Muslims and their, as Lawrence puts it, “performance of Allah:” a study of how they – women and men, poets and peasants, mystics and philosophers, reggae artists, pacifists and warriors (some righteous and some quite the opposite) – have been experiencing, expressing, invoking and interpreting God. Who is Allah? is a must read for anyone interested in Islam and Muslim thought and practice. At once rich and accessible, in this book Bruce Lawrence, a towering authority on Islam, treats readers to a delightful buffet of the breadth and depth of Muslim spirituality. How do Muslims invoke, remember, define, and debate Allah, while seeking to live a life that accords with His norms and template of piety? That is the central question addressed in this book as Lawrence introduces readers to major facets of Muslim ritual life and intellectual traditions-past and present. In addition to its deep erudition, this book is also lyrically written and will thus be an easy read for everyone. A true tour de force that anyone interested in religion, Islam, and in the politics surrounding Islam must read.
