Modern Take on Modern Practice
By Morgan Daimler
This is the second book I have read by this author, both on the topic of the Celts, and I found this one as perplexing as the other. The title of the book would seem to imply that it is about the ancient Celts, yet the majority of the cosmology and spirituality she writes about is thoroughly modern, with a discussion of concepts through the lens of modern psychology, for example. Beyond that though, as with the other book, this text is riddled with factual errors. The author asserts, repeatedly, that the Celts were illiterate even though we have multiple sources, including Caesar's Gallic Wars, which clearly say that while they didn't write down sacred material they did know how to write in both Greek and Latin and used these for trade. She includes no bibliography or suggested source material, yet repeatedly quotes sources, and I'm willing to give it two stars because of the amount of quoted material she includes from those sources, which is helpful. She asserts that there is little evidence of animal or human sacrifice when we actually have significant amounts of archeological evidence supporting the practice. She discusses Druidic divination and yet never once mentions any of the methods like imbas forosnai or teinm laida, instead focusing on methods that we actually don't have any clear evidence that they ever used, such as Ogham. The author also falls into the common trap of believing that the Celts were matrirchal and that Celtic women had equality and equal rights, and while it is true that Celtic women had it far better than their Greek and Roman contemporaries they were still far from equal by modern standards - in fact a woman could not be a legal witness nor could she normally have any place in society except as she was connected to a male relative, and if injured her honor price was paid to that male relative, not to her (see Fergus Kelly's Guide to Early Irish Law for details of this). Again as with the other book the mythology is a mess. To give only a few examples: Cu Chulain's horse, the grey of Macha was not a mare but a stallion (he was called the king of horses), The book says that the Dagda's cauldron could revive the dead - it couldn't, in fact it was one end of his staff which could do this; it was the god Dian Cecht who had a well or cauldron which could heal. And the Dagda was never forced to eat from his own cauldron by his enemies, but rather from a pit dug into the ground.
Overall this book is one person's take on Celtic paganism, but I found the title misleading and the many factual errors troubling. I wouldn't recommend it.

Brilliant Book, Great New Info, would be 5 stars if not riddled with typos
By L. Shields
I would love to both see and have have an edited and updated version of this book, which would feature a lack of errors so painfully obvious when reading. Also, I would gladly pay a higher price to have an annotated version that would include a detailed bibliography of sources researched, following the main text.

It's a good book when you're just starting to learn about the celtic world, yet it still lacks a chronological order, which makes it a bit difficult to follow at times.
