The Bell Tax: Or, The Great Compromise, by Daniel Dreyfus

Some say that the rich create the jobs in America. Others say that the poor don’t have enough money to live the American way. Speaker James Palantine engineers a compromise that satisfies both parties: a tax reform law known as the Bell Tax that lowers the tax burden on the rich and the poor, but jacks up the tax rates paid by the middle class. However, rather than usher in a bipartisan era of good feelings, it leads to economic collapse. The Bell Tax Crisis isn't a problem for Peter Feller, who makes trillions from his tax farming Income Reappropriation Service and convinces Congress to pass new laws, such as the infamous Pizza Act, that benefit him and his cronies. However, his greed, narcissism, paranoia, and growing insanity lead him to secure his income by any means necessary, including inciting a mob to kill a business partner and conspiring to take over the government as leader of the Brotherhood of Rich People. The public, including popular news host Frank Waterboard of The Interrogation Chamber, is initially enamored with the Bell Tax, but many turn to violence once it goes into effect. The only voice of reason in this situation is, of all organizations, the KKK, which, despite its violent history, attempts to maintain peace and reconcile ideological schisms that threaten to tear it apart. As Palantine’s popularity plummets, he concerns himself not with stopping the mobs or repealing the hated Bell Tax, but undermining his clueless opponent, President David Jackson, so he can be the next commander-in-chief. In his debut novel, Daniel Dreyfus combines witty political satire and moving human drama to create a timeless story of the consequences of partisanship and greed.

About the Author
Daniel Dreyfus is the author of The Bell Tax. He is as interesting, charismatic, dynamic, and creative as this picture of him suggests. He promotes safety, stability, and security; upholds the high principles of excellence; and has faith, conviction, and belief that you enjoyed (or will soon enjoy) his book. When not working on The Bell Tax, Daniel attends college, eats ice cream, reads aloof books that befit a man of his exalted status, makes jokes about historical events that no one understands, and berates his brother at the dinner table. He generally doesn't do all of that at the same time.

This novel is a great satire on American politics - it's fun to read
By Maria Ines Viana de Barros Lira
This novel is a great satire on American politics - it's fun to read, intelligent, well-built and enjoyable. If you're looking for something that will make you laugh but at the same time makes you think about the good, the bad and the absurd of politics and the political system in general. Highly recommended!

The Bell Tax is a fantastic political satire
By Jake
The Bell Tax is a fantastic political satire. Hilarious throughout, and often deeply insightful, this story takes on modern American democracy as a whole by addressing the great ironies of political conflict that ideologues of all stripes seem to overlook. At 162 pages, it's a fairly quick read, but the story's many unique characters and countless ridiculous situations yield a very deep plot with twists and turns in every chapter. If you're a fan of good political fiction, or just good comedy in general, The Bell Tax is an absolute must read.

The Perfect Balance of Wit, Story, and Emotion
By Ali
The Bell Tax begins in the middle of a partisan crisis: Congress is bitterly divided between the two major parties and nothing’s getting done. So far, it doesn’t sound that far removed from reality, but things quickly take a topsy-turvy turn. An absurd law raising middle-class income tax rates as high as 100% is passed with overwhelming support as a “Great Compromise” and wealthy businessmen exploit the situation to make billions and billions of dollars as the economy collapses and chaos erupts everywhere. It’s a brilliantly satirical account of partisanship, Congress’s alienation from reality, and crony capitalism.
But what makes Daniel Dreyfus’s book legitimately brilliant is that he does something I’ve never seen done with political satire before: he gives it an emotional soul. His characters may do silly, even hilarious things, like smacking the Constitution during a campaign ads and giving a speech on giving speeches, but they have motivations and characters that make them more than cardboard stereotypes. My favorite was the President, who comes from such an establishment background (“Over five distinguished generations, his family had produced four congressmen, two governors, a senator, and now a President.”) that he can only speak in campaign rhetoric. He’s well-intentioned but clueless and provides the perfect foil for the conniving, ambitious, insecure Speaker Palantine.
The Bell Tax is a funny satire, but it’s more than that: a satire that succeeds as an emotionally engaging story. It does both amazingly well. I eagerly await whatever mix of topsy-turvy and pathos Dreyfus puts out next.
