Sometimes a story has more than two sides--this one, for example. When both sides in an intergalactic civil war believe that the other side is committing terrorist acts, only one thing is certain: both sides are wrong. The truth lies beyond the veil.
When two civilians and a space station engineer discover who destroyed the starship Hrabrost, they must find each other and find help before the killers find them. Only by working together with Admiral Jenkins and his daughter, Amanda, can they stop the killers before they destroy the Terran Alliance from the inside.
From mechlizards to anthropoveils, from political asylum to the insane asylum, this book peels away another layer of the onion-like story first told by the first two books in the series, Traitors In Waiting and Enemies From Within.
Intricately woven around the previous stories, this book tells a new tale that will leave you reinterpreting everything you have read so far.
Klern waited in the short hall that led to a maintenance tube along the outer perimeter of the landing pad--a tube that, in turn, led to the port weapons battery.
Klern brandished the machete, running his finger gently along the length of the blade, carefully checking its sharpness without drawing blood. The trap was set and baited, his breath bated, his bloodlust nearly sated.
It would only be a matter of time before Pierre came around the corner. Klern could hear his footsteps in the distance.
Yes. Yes, he thought. Come closer. Closer. It will all be over soon.
When worlds collide, only two things are certain: everything you thought you knew is wrong, and the people you thought you knew are no longer who they appear to be.

From the Author
Beyond the Veil is the third book in my Patriots series, and the final book of the initial trilogy. I began planning this book in my head while I was still writing the first novel, and began writing small fragments of the book while I was still writing the second novel in the trilogy. However, I didn't really start writing Beyond the Veil in earnest until about July of 2010 (a hazard of writing fiction as a low-priority background project), and finished it in about April of 2011.
What makes this book unique among the Patriots series is that most of the events occur simultaneously with events in the first book. Part of the second book's events also occur in parallel with the first, but those characters don't really interact with the first book's characters until the very end, making the details less critical. But this book contains actual fragments of the first book. That meant, among other things, that between this book and the first book, minor copyedits often required updating the same text in several different places.
For example, Pierre's escape scene occurs in at least four places:
- In Traitors in Waiting while Amanda and Joseph are eating lunch.
- At the end of Enemies From Within in the preview of Beyond the Veil.
- At the beginning of Beyond the Veil prior to the flashback that begins the story.
- About halfway through Beyond the Veil, when the flashback catches up with the present time.
Worse, different copies are slightly different. The copy in Traitors omits Pierre's name, because you aren't supposed to know that he is important yet. The copy in the middle of Beyond the Veil is also different (slightly) because it adds details about what Pierre was doing and why he was trying to escape from the psych ward.
And this pattern repeats itself throughout the book, with various seemingly unimportant scenes from Traitors repeating themselves in an extended form, with additional details either before, after, or occasionally during the scene. The goal of these parts was to lull the reader into a false sense of comfort--making the reader think, "I've read this before," only to suddenly see something that they don't remember, and start questioning everything else that they've read up to that point.
Additionally, there were a few sections of Traitors that I repeated in a highly abbreviated form, simply because I couldn't have Amanda suddenly jump from the comfort of Terran Command Station to a hospital bed near the fringes of the solar system without explanation, even though the rest of the Traitors story line had little impact on the events in BTV beyond taking Amanda out of commission.
In short, this was the most complicated thing I've ever attempted to write, and I spent almost thirteen years writing developer documentation for a computer company, so that's saying something. But I think the end result was worth the effort. It's a fun read that ties up most of the loose ends from Traitors, while adding a few of its own.
Since I finished writing this book I've spent random bits of free time going through the books repeatedly and editing the verbiage, ensuring that the three books are properly synchronized (in terms of both the timing of the storylines and the incorporation of editorial corrections), building the production tools that I used to produce the PDFs for the print editions, plus two different EPUB (electronic) versions--one with all sorts of specific tweaks for Kindle readers, and one much more traditional version for EPUB readers.
And somewhere in there, I found the time to design all of the book covers, then redesign them with bigger, more readable fonts so that they'd look better in thumbnails, then redesign them again two or three more times as the final page counts and the final paperback dimensions changed (repeatedly). I also did some custom font design work, particularly for the electronic editions (for licensing reasons), though some of those tweaked fonts also made it into the print editions.
I've written various articles over on my blog about the publishing process in hindsight, and I have several more coming, so if you're curious about what goes into publishing a book, have a look, and check back often for more articles.

Good book.

Even better than the first. I really enjoyed the characters and their "growth" throughout the book. The story line is more concise and informative. You could tell the author knew a lot about computers - much more than I! Good story line and very enjoyable.
