About the Author
Rabbi Avi Weiss is senior rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale the Bayit, Bronx, New York. He is also the founding president of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah (YCT), the modern and open Orthodox rabbinical school in New York, and cofounder of the International Rabbinic Fellowship (IRF), an international organization of modern Orthodox rabbis. Most recently, he founded Yeshivat Maharat, a school that ordains women to become halakhic decisors and Jewish spiritual leaders. Rabbi Weiss served as National Chairman of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ) from 1982 to 1991 and subsequently as National President of AMCHA the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, raising a voice of moral conscience on behalf of the Jewish people and humankind throughout the world. Rabbi Weiss is the author of Holistic Prayer, Women at Prayer, and Spiritual Activism. He is also the editor of the Haggadah for the Yom HaShoah Seder. His essays and articles have appeared in publications around the world.

Compelling, Personal, Important: Inside the Movement to Free Soviet Jews

This book by Rav Avi Weiss is the first book on the campaign for freedom for Soviet Jews written by an insider, a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the most successful human rights movement of the 20th century. Written in an engaging, personal style, full of recollections and anecdotes, it brings readers into the arena of the successful collaboration between Soviet Jews yearning for freedom and Jewish activists in the west, who worked outside the Jewish establishment to achieve their common goals. Rabbi Weiss introduces us to the major personalities and conflicts, and pays tribute to the hundreds of people involved in the struggle, which ultimately changed the face of Israel and the N. American Jewish community.

Great, Fascinating History of the Activist Side of the Soviet Jewry Movement

This book is fascinating! As someone born at the tail end of this movement, I had no idea that the activist Jewish community made such a difference in the fight to free Soviet Jewry. The personal stories in this book make the struggle all the more thrilling and alive. A book to inspire a new generation of activists and activism! I really feel I learned so much from this book.
