Best Ever Travel Tips - not really
By loveguitar
I'll admit I was disappointed with this travel tips book. I found it lacking by not including enough information in several different areas. If I was going on a trip or vacation overseas, and this was my only travel tips book, I would be having a hard time getting around. If you are even a fairly seasoned traveler, and already know something of all that is involved with booking flights and the whole airport experience (baggage/refund of tickets/how to shop for tickets/parking/etc....), how to pack and what you like to take along, then this book will be just a light, little extra tidbit of info. But for people like me, who rarely fly or go out of the country, I would have to find much more information than what this book tells me.
It's a fairly thick book with only 50 pages of some scant paragraphs with "tips". The facing pages are totally used up with artwork. A whole lot more information could and should have been packed into this book. I know the whole idea was to keep it light, but I don't think that worked out very well - it's too light. It does include a brief list of "apps" and websites that might be very useful for a traveler, but you can get a whole list of apps and websites off the internet, plus a boat load of travel tips. And speaking of boats, the only thing mentioned about travel by boat is how a family could catch a freighter to get from point A to point B. That was interesting, but I would need a whole lot more information about how to do that. And absolutely nothing was mentioned about traveling via cruise ships, though a few train travel tips were included.
It talks a lot about all the electronic gadgets and accessories you should take, a mention of Flickr and Skype, but in the end it says it might be a good idea just to leave most of that stuff behind. I was already thinking that way before that. I wouldn't take a laptop and all that electronic baggage - just my camera and a cheap cell phone. I like the low-tech way of travel so much better since it frees you up from constant worry an vigilance keeping an eye on your electronics.
It has a few pages with a global tipping chart (useful), malaria around the world (useful), global climate map (maybe useful), international plug sockets (useful) but all this stuff would be in other and better travel tip books and on the internet. I think giving this book 3 stars is being very generous.

Not Just Another List of Tips - It's By Lonely Planet!
By Ryan K.
If you want a free list of travel tips, the internet is filled with lists of opinions. This handy-sized guide (well, it's larger than pocket sized) is filled with excellent advice written by one of the top 3 or 4 guide companies in the world. Lonely Planet is arguably the BEST series for college students up through middle-class travelers. (If you can afford $375/night for a hotel, maybe one of the other popular series is better for you).
We always resonate with ideas that reflect our own. I opened to the tip that tells you to make your own packing list and stick to it (don't add things last minute). I discovered this long ago after my first airplane flight. No generic list will do - you must make your own.
Interesting special pages on: (1) Things an airplane pilot knows about travel, (2) world rail travel, (3) the truth about upgrades, (4) women traveling solo.
What I didn't see was what I consider the most important tip that I give to other travelers: book a hotel in the area of the city you want to end the day. For example, if you want to party late, book near the night life. You want to call it a night after dinner - book near the type of restaurants you like. You like to shop and go back to your room often - get a hotel near the shopping district. You like the "Old Town" ... you get the idea. I have had vacation disappointments after getting to the city only to realize the hotel is a mile away from anything. Use the MAP feature of today's hotel booking websites.
For most of my travel life I used a Lonely Planet guide for the down-to-earth information and another (lately DK for the pictures). They really thought this generic guide through.

7 Billion Ways (And Counting) To Be Happy, What's Yours?
By JP
This book was a gift I received from a friend of mine and I often take it on travels with me. It looks at 44 different countries/cultures: Australia, Bali, Indonesia, Barbados, Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cook Island, Denmark, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mali, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Niger, Pacific Islands, Panama, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Tibet, Tokelau, Turkey, United States of America, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vietnam and sets out how they define 'happiness'.
The first sentence of the introduction sums up the purpose of this book well, "HAPPINESS. One word, nine letters, roughly 7 billion definitions, one for each person on the planet." You step back and think, what does happiness mean to me? This book lays out different celebrations in each of the countries listed that are celebrated from one day, to month long events, and even events that are celebrated anytime, any day. Better yet, this book lays out the secret that each culture holds to their happiness celebration.
Researchers claim to know so much about what invokes and sustains happiness in humans, so why are most of us still so unhappy? Some studies have been done on cultures that live longer than the rest of us (western society) and what they do differently that allows them longer, healthier lives. Perhaps also, it is about how they celebrate life that plays a role.
This book is very well done, great size for keeping on a shelf, a night stand, or taking with you on travels to discover for yourself why these different cultures are so happy. The illustrations are really nice and fit with each culture presented.
