At the age of eight, bullets shot past her head as her mother and youngest siblings piled into a car. Not enough room left for the rest of the family, Clementine and her brothers walked beside the vehicle as bombs exploded beside them. Bodies fell to the ground. Dead. You were lucky if you survived without a wound of some kind. With no time to stop and mourn those you love, the exodus from war-torn Rwanda was a chaotic and terrifying experience. Especially for a child like Clementine Bihiga. Clementine wrote Happily Broken; Discovering Happiness through Pain and Suffering not to preach to people, but to come beside them as a friend who cares—as a friend who has traveled through the fire and come out on the other side. Free. Does she have scars? Of course, but she’s here to tell you that scars can be beautiful. Pain and suffering can be beautiful if embraced with a full heart and genuine faith. Why me? It’s something we’ve all said at some point, but what if we turned that into, “Why not me?” What if we could embrace trials and turn them into a redemptive part of our lives? What if we could not only appreciate the silver linings in our lives, but actually see them as beautiful? Clementine endured a life of many struggles. Family members have been murdered. Dreams have been broken. But Happily Broken is her testament that proves that you can take that brokenness and turn it into something radiant. Breaking refines and frees you. Crying is healthy and human, not something to suppress and hide from. In a culture filled with emotionally bottled up people, Clementine’s story refreshes us with hope and encouragement. Tragedies do not define us. It’s our reaction to them that makes us who we are today. You can choose a beautiful life, no matter how many difficulties you have faced and continue to face. You can be thankful for your brokenness. You can learn to value each shattered fragment of your life when you find out how those pieces can be used to mold you into something new, something that shines with the brilliance of a heart full of love and faith. Clementine has experienced it first hand and she would love to share with you how you can find beauty in the midst of storms. It’s true. It really is. You can be happily broken.

About the Author
Clementine Bihiga, born in 1986, is an inspirational public speaker and published author of "Happily Broken: Discovering Happiness Through Pain and Suffering". At the age of eight, Clementine and her family were forced to flee their home in Rwanda due to the Genocide and Civil war of 1994 which killed almost a million people in 3 months. Clementine and her family lived as refugees in multiple refugee camps and settlements before they were admitted to the USA in 1999 as refugees. Clementine who faced many life and death situations at a young age including living in refugee camps and waking up among the dead, being bullied as a high school student and losing a daughter, has turned her tragic past into a positive calling of inspiring others to never give up. When Clementine climbed on a "log" in lake Kivu trying to rescue a shirt taken by the waves and finally realizing it was a dead body, she could have given up. When she was beat almost to death by a motorist on her way home, she could have given up. When she woke up among dead bodies claimed by Malaria, Typhoid, Cholera, etc. she could have given up hope. When she got to the USA and was bullyied in high school for being different every single day, she would have quit and given up. Life was unforgiving for Clementine but she pressed on. She went on to speak 5 languages, got involved in many organizations such as the Student Leadership Council, World Youth Alliance, the United Nations Agents of Change, the Human Rights Commitee, The Student Achievement in Research and Scholarships and the Student Advisory Commitee for Foreign Discrimination. Clementine was also selected to be on a panel of the Africana Studies at the Stander Symposium and a panel on International Discrimination. She also interned at the New York State Attorney General's Office and worked as a Campaign Fellow for the United Way. All these was accomplished while she was in college. After college, Clementine and her husband Chris, who she met in refugee settlements in Kenya were married and had their son in 2011. As a fulltime mother and a fulltime employee in Healthcare sales, Clementine decided to also get her Masters Degree. She accomplished this in one year and graduate with a 3.9 GPA with a Masters in Public Administration in HealthCare Administration and also earned a promotion at work for exceeding her sales goals by 160% the same year! Clementine is resilient, positive, charming and has an addicting personality.

I normally don't write book reviews, but for this book I just had too. I loved how the author stayed true to herself throughout the book. The book is interesting from start to end. I also loved how the author was directly speaking to her readers while telling her story. She wanted to transfer a message and she gave it her own way. Reading her life made me appreciate what I have in mine. Seeing all the challenges she went through and how happy she was taught me something about gratefulness and positivity. I would recommend this book to people who feel like their lives are unfair and they want to give up. The author believed in a better life regardless of the bumpy journey. It would be great if the author wrote a second book to this, as I felt certain parts needed more details; however, it was a great quick read.

Happily Broken is a very emotional book
By John McDonald
Happily Broken is a very emotional book. Through all the hard times Clementine has gone through, she remains a positive person. We all can learn from this book. The reader cannot imagine what she went through as a child, yet she has become such an influence on so many. She is an inspiration to anyone reading the book. I highly recommend it.
