A roadmap to liberation from suffering

In this age of "spiritual bypassing", where the temptation to seek one more teacher, try one more route to enlightenment, buy one more book pervades the counterculture, this little gem is what we all have been waiting for: a map that finally leads HOME. Home to the heart of transformation, directly through the pain of samsara via stillness and silence to the spaciousness of one's natural mind. Whatever the reader's belief system, these simple practices support the direct experience of the sacred refuge within.
Tenzin Rinpoche's distillation of these ancient wisdom teachings and his clear step-by-step guidance in their practical application in everyday life take the reader directly to the heart of transformation.
A word to the wise when using the enclosed CD as a support in practice: there is very little time allowed to fully experience the Stillness, Silence and Spaceousness into which the listener is being guided by Rinpoche's words. If you use it this way, a "pause" function on your CD player is highly recommended!

Extraordinarily Skillful Exposition of the Path to the Spirit.

I am an avid reader of Buddhist and Tibetan books as well as "The Course of Miracles". Always I am looking for clues on how to heal the mind of the voices of guilt and anxiety with which the ego constantly plagues us all. In my messages to Friends I have usually stressed becoming aware of and then looking at these voices from a detached viewpoint giving one the ability to "stand apart" from them and thus heal. In this process I have persisted with varying success. Until now I never had guidance with what to do with those mind games except to watch without engaging until they dissipate. This indeed is a core of the process (non-engagement) but I knew intuitively something was missing. Every book on Buddhist meditation and Christian prayer stopped after telling the practitioner to watch the mind. They never advise what one is to do with the thoughts except to note the thoughts, let them dissolve and in Christianity take them to God/Jesus in prayer. Finally I have found a little book that gives some very skillful directions.

The three mind watching instructions are called "Finding Refuge in the Three Doors." It is essential that one is totally nonjudgmental of oneself and others when utilizing these doors. The first is stillness. When in pain just be with the body's pain concentrating on stillness. Eventually the pain dissipates. That's not to say you ignore pain killers and be a martyr. But to also have a mindset around the pain of stillness, neither reacting against the pain nor reveling in it. The pain will dissipate.

The second door is silence. Everyone has mind voices that remember the guilt surrounding an event or voices that talk extraneously like "what we are cooking for dinner?" during prayer and/or meditation. As we become aware of these thoughts they can haunt you. The antidote is silence. Watching non-judgmentally and with awareness concentrate on silence. Since the mind is not engaging the voices, the voices fade away.

The third door is space. When frightened, angry, analyzing, jealous, prideful, in an anxiety attack etc., try to watch one's mind "from above the conflict" and find the space within the ego's gyrations. See the fracas as it is: "much to do about nothing". The ego attack will dissipate.

But the three doors are just the first act. The question then becomes who is doing the observing? The author continues with an exploration of the nature of the mind in exquisite detail using the "heart instructions" by Dawa Gyaltsen and a CD with meditations on these instructions. What follows is a remarkable exposition of the path to the spirit. The instructions are: Vision is Mind, Mind is Empty, Emptiness is Clear Light, Clear Light is Union, and Union is Great Bliss. Each meditation segment is throughly discoursed. There is a final chapter entitled The Treasury of the Natural Mind. These latter musings or refuges are even more skillful than the beginning of the book with the three doors. One is taken on a journey that goes to one's core. The reader cannot help but find the "that of God" within oneself. This book and accompanying CD are remarkable life changing jewels.
