Utopia: The Secular Delusion, by Bo Jinn

Bō Jinn has fast become a popular maverick figure in the immortal debate on religion with his first book, provocatively entitled Illogical Atheism, where his unique approach to the subject, dubbed ‘unapologetics’, earned him both praise and contempt in equal measure from people on all ends of the spectrum. In this small reflection, Jinn tackles the related subject of secularism and the ‘Utopian Dream’ with that same combination of eloquence, humor, insight and severity that readers are bound to either love or hate.

A secular delusion indeed
By Scott Pepis
Why is the silly claim "a world without religion is better,"--at such an alarming rate--blindly hymned from pop culture to the halls of philosophy? For those asking this most obvious question, you've just found a book sure to add much value to what's become a circus of absurdity disguised as intellectualism.

Author Bo Jinn pulls no punches in his latest book: “Utopia: The Secular Delusion”. I’ve read his previous work, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed his most recent addition to what has already been a provocative display of whit. Of all secular authors you may read, few will approach with a level of honesty on par with Jinn. He’s quick to fairly assess all parties, and provides a unique perspective that can quite often be labeled as “middle ground.” His perspective deserves a wide hearing.

I’d first like to begin by highlighting something Jinn recognizes quite well: that even though secularism and liberal thought can inspire positive change from outdated schools of thought, a completely secular society (notice that I said ‘society’) must have laws which may appear to the anarchist as oppressive behavior in need of reform. Jinn writes, “Even the anarchic society must be united in a common commitment to anarchy, and we should assume that it too would quite readily go to war to protect its order.” (Location 581) Doctrines are inescapable, even in a secular society.

Furthermore, Jinn recognizes the difficulty in establishing a moral law (in a true and objective sense) in the absence of theology, writing, “And the point is simply this: that if we were to wake up one fine day and find that people no longer believed in morality, it is hard to conceive of any argument one could make as to why they should believe in justice, and harder still to conceive of a reason as to why the heavy boot of power should desist from stamping out the face of the weak, if doing so suited the fancies of the strong.” (Location 212) To where Jinn rightly concludes, “…without the Law of Heaven, the Law of Earth is but the Law of Power, and that consequently the Secular State will always be characterised by the oppression of its own people and war with every other people.” (Location 563)

In a secular universe, what logical values can be drawn? Bo Jinn points out the grim truth in a universe that neither knows nor cares, where we all dance to our DNA in pitiless indifference:

“1. To prolong existence;

2. To maximise pleasure;

3. To minimize pain; and finally

4. To ensure by any means necessary that nothing may compromise the pursuit.

It is only too easy to see why the pursuit of power is logically inexorable to this purpose.” (Location 535-543) These ‘values’ are as superficial as they are disturbing in light of what the heart truly requires. But a secular universe neither knows nor cares. Jinn points out, “But any act from which the Self cannot possibly profit simply has no rational justification in the secular universe, even in the sense of one’s deeds reverberating throughout the future of humanity, which at any rate is just as doomed to die as the Self (and these days possibly not long afterward).” (Location 498)

My criticism towards this book is brief. Aside from a few grammatical errors, I disagree with Jinn when he claims the ‘fatal irony’ of religion is the hypocrisy of its followers. I agree we can all be hypocrites, but we must be able to connect actions with doctrines. Hypocrisy was quite common in Jesus’ day, and this is why He befriended adulterers and thieves before self-righteous Pharisees who dishonored God’s Word for their earthly benefit.

But make no mistake, this book is as easy and fun to read as it is difficult to put down. Though the author makes no theological claims, I’d say an earthly utopia is most likely to be found in the only proven philosophy capable of inventing things like science and democracy: Christianity. Jinn’s book, however, makes a case that’s very deep, while pointing out seemingly obvious things that have gone unnoticed. In order to find out what these things are, give this book a try.

I’ll give you one example: Jinn articulates on Genesis pretty well, but things really get interesting when he ties it to present day issues. Jinn writes, “…every vile atrocity perpetrated at the suit of every tyrant from Nimrod to Chairman Mao must have begun with that same diabolical whisper: “Ye shall be as gods.”” (Location 378) Quite so. Humanity is meant to serve, or else we become deluded into thinking we are the gods who should delight at everyone else’s expense.

I Highly recommend this book, if not for its whit then for its humor: “There does not appear to be much merit to the thought that in the end humanity, after thousands of years of civilisation and hundreds of thousands of years of evolution will finally come full circle, so that human nature may finally be accommodated to the politics of the baboon.” (Location 188) Jinn rightly notices what Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins are too blind to see: a secular universe is far from perfect.

This is must read for anyone who desires to live ...
By Noah
This is must read for anyone who desires to live as free people in free society and dedicated to liberty and freedom and there is precious little time left to save this nation from tyranny of the secularists. Silence or inaction will bring about a Stalinist Gualg of tyranny and death. Man 's attempts to create his own secular world without God always results unbelievable horrors,oppression, suppression and death for millions.of human beings. American academia is core foundation for this breeding ground tyranny and the culture of intolerance, violence, suppression, persecution and death. This book layout the truth of the evil that secularism is.

Convincing argument against secularism
By David A. Miller
The author makes a strong case that secularists operate under the delusion that they can create Heaven on Earth. All that has happened throughout history is the occurrence of tyranny, including revolutionary France, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union. The modern European Union and the United States may be heading towards a similar fate as the leaders succumb to the temptations of power, unrestrained by the laws of Heaven. They labor under the delusion that they can recreate Utopia.
