About the Author
Kamla K. Kapur is well known in her native India as a poet, author, and playwright. Her previous work includes Ganesha Goes to Lunch (2007) and Rumi’s Tales from the Silk Road (2009). Kapur has also published two books of poetry, As a Fountain in a Garden and Radha Speaks, numerous short stories, and a series of award winning plays. Kapur was on the faculty of Grossmont College in San Diego, California, for eighteen years and taught courses in play writing, poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, mythology, Shakespeare, and women’s literature. She and her husband, Payson Stevens, divide their time living in the Kullu Valley in the Indian Himalayas and in Southern California.
Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh is Professor of Religious Studies at Colby College. She holds the Crawford Family endowed chair. She has published extensively in the field of Sikhism. Her views have also been aired on television and radio around the world. She serves as a trustee for the American Institute for Indian Studies, and is on the editorial board of the History of Religions.

Actualize Your Divinity

What is The Divine? How does it serve us and we, it?
Whatever you’re experiencing right now, dear reader – whatever the struggle or plateau – this book will speak to you. It will lead you on “the ultimate journey” ~ “the pilgrimage to yourself.”
From threads of historical fact and prodigious fiction, Kamla Kapur weaves an engrossing tale of adventure based on the life of Guru Nanak and his traveling companion, Mardana.
It doesn’t matter that Baba Nanak was a Sikh. The wisdom he imparts is not owned by any single religion or spiritual practice. He didn’t define himself by his beliefs, nor did he define others by theirs. A spiritual eclectic, he did not judge. He simply lived and spoke his truth as he knew it to be.
The underlying message in this enthralling story is that divinity lives in each and every one of us, lying dormant until we actualize it. As you may well imagine, this is indeed no small task. Yet within this seed lies the potential to manifest fruit within a split second. But how can this be? “No small task” and “instantaneous manifestation” seem mutually exclusive. However, as Nanak explains, the barrier to understanding and realization is the “manmukh” or lower mind, which allies itself with fear and dams all possibility. Once we step out of our own way, the universe is the limit.
I read The Singing Guru over one long night of caring for a friend who was dying. Through unmitigated waves of grief and fatigue, the voice of The All Knowing would speak to me from the pages of this book:
“Suffering brings you closer to God.”
“One can sacrifice only so much of one’s sleep for another.”
As I continued to read, the pages seemed to turn themselves; and before I knew it, the last page had turned. But I wasn’t ready for the story to end. I wanted it to continue. I needed it to continue. Then I realized that my dear friend, struggling with her impending demise, must be feeling the same about her life. She wasn’t ready to let go. For whatever reason – perhaps unfinished business on the spiritual plane – she needed to continue. I prayed that she would find her way.
“Prayers are nothing but love.”
In her struggle to remain on this earth, I saw the potential that lay before me for my life. And I felt blessed; grateful. As my friend's time was running out, mine was running forward, carrying with it the opportunity to manifest divinity – the opportunity for enlightenment.
I sat on the bed next to her, took her hand, and softly sang John Denver’s beautiful song, Sweet Surrender. So often Baba Nanak would urge Mardana to surrender to The Divine. I understood what he meant when he said, “No better time” to sing “than in the mouth of death.” I hope my friend was consoled and renewed.
“ . . . for death alone bestows life and feelings, beauty and love.”
“ . . . a sweet and total surrender.”
I had intended this review to be a critique of the author’s skill and writing talent, as is the usual approach. But my deep personal interaction with this story wouldn’t permit it. As I began writing, my emotions precluded my mind offering the standard critique. Yet isn’t any literary work that touches a reader’s soul and moves them in ways beyond comprehension and explanation, in itself, its own exquisite review?
“Be still and communicate through your heart.”
“For as our hearts are, so we become.”
Kamla Kapur eloquently portrays life as a series of seeming contradictions played out against the backdrop of unrealized potential. Her two main characters – teacher and student, guru and devotee – epitomize and animate this drama within a montage of adventure, suffering, struggle, and humor. We come to accept that time isn’t linear and that past, present, and future exist simultaneously. Or at least the author brings us to the precipice of considering such a possibility.
Kamla Kapur is the quintessential storyteller. She vivifies her characters with human foibles and aspirations, and then juxtaposes these against sharp wit and supernatural occurrences. She creates an atmosphere within which the reader is drawn to empathize with human tragedy while simultaneously able to witness the facetiousness of the human condition. Together with being extremely well-written, The Singing Guru is a plethora of both wisdom and entertainment.
The message I found most comforting was:
The Divine “is everywhere, in every direction, in every space, without exception.”
Consider that message, dear reader, the next time you feel “lost and alone on some forgotten highway” (Sweet Surrender). It just may bring you a little closer to yourself, the world around you, and The Divine. For we are all one . . .

Delightful window onto the origin of one of the world's major religions

As one quite unfamiliar with the origins of the Sikh religion I found Kamla Kapur's "The Singing Guru" a fascinating and thoroughly entertaining window that invites the reader to learn more while even in itself providing opportunities to consider the Guru Nanak's wisdom as it might apply to my own worldview and that of other non-religious folk. Although I suppose that some fictional elements have been introduced I am confident the basis of these many tales is true to what scholars know of Guru Nanak's contributions as the first of the ten significant guru's who over several hundred years strengthened and codified the tenets of today's Sikhism.
I've had the honor of meeting the author in her homes both in California and Himachal Pradesh, and, later reading her work, am not at all surprised by her ability to bring out the essence of the Guru's messages in simple but elegant prose. Her choice of illustrating the Teacher's lessons through the all-too-human failings of his occasionally-disloyal attendant Mardana is engaging, entertaining and ultimately very successful. Even if this might be your only entry to the principles of Sikhism I recommend it highly as a delightful introduction to the values and beliefs of a remarkably large number of people (over 27 million) who have played and continue to play a crucial part in the culture and politics of India.
Please also consider other works by Kamla, including the light-hearted but ultimately profound treatment of one of Hinduism's key characters in Ganeesh Goes to Lunch.

HIGH ART AND WISDOM ROLLED INTO ONE
I have been interested in Sikhism for a long time and have read several books on the subject. But THE SINGING GURU is like no other book because it is entirely original in conception and imagination while being true to the spirit of Sikhism and its central messages. It is beautifully written, the engrossing and enchanting fiction brings alive the history, the characters are real and you can identify with their conflicts. I found such a kinship with the central character, Mardana, and his follies, and his so many relevant questions, which are answered by Guru Nanak. I have been waiting and searching for such a book on Sikhism and its founder for a long time. I am happy to have found it in THE SINGING GURU. The book is hard to put down. I read it in a few days.
POSTSCRIPT: The world knows so little about Sikhism and this is an excellent introduction which allows the reader to see what a modern and relevant religion it is.
