Life Driven Purpose: How an Atheist Finds Meaning, by Dan Barker

Every thinking person wants to lead a life of meaning and purpose. For thousands of years, holy books have told us that such a life is available only through obedience and submission to some higher power. Today, the faithful keep popular devotionals and tracts within easy reach on bedside tables and mobile devices, all communicating this common message: Life is meaningless without God. Former pastor Dan Barker eloquently, powerfully, and rationally upends this long-held belief in Life Driven Purpose. Offering words of enrichment, emancipation, and inspiration, he reminds us how millions of atheists lead happy, loving, moral, and purpose-filled lives. Practicing what he preaches, he also demonstrates through his own personal journey that life is valuable for its own sake-that meaning and purpose come not from above, but from within.

Review
"A lovely book!"
--Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion

"One of the biggest misconceptions about atheists is that without God they can have no morals, values, or meaning in their lives. In this lovely secular sermon, Dan Barker handily rebuts that claim, showing that true meaning and morality can come only from accepting our finitude, and dealing with it rationally and humanistically."
--Jerry Coyne, author of Why Evolution Is True

"Dan Barker has cleverly reversed the arrows of purpose so they fly from the bows of life instead of raining down from an imaginary archer in the sky."
--Victor J. Stenger, author of God: The Failed Hypothesis

"If you've been searching for meaning and purpose in life, it's a sure bet you've never found answers in a book--at least not answers that are grounded in any kind of objective reality--until now. Dan Barker's Life Driven Purpose deserves its own category. It's a book of emancipation, a book of vitality, a book of enrichment, a book of celebration, a book of inspiration--put simply, a book that honestly and rationally teaches how to live."
--Peter Boghossian, author of A Manual for Creating Atheists

"Religions hijacked the meaning of life long ago and now Dan Barker is stealing it back. In this brilliant and inspirational book, he shows that value, worth, and meaning can be discovered and created by anyone--no religion required."
--Guy P. Harrison, author of Think: Why You Should Question Everything and 50 Simple Questions for Every Christian

"This book is really 'Something' (see chapter 5). In his calm, patient voice, Dan Barker helps us understand and untwist black-and-white thinking so we can see and appreciate all the colors of the rainbow."
--Linda LaScola, co-author (with Daniel Dennett) of Caught in the Pulpit: Leaving Belief Behind

"Life Driven Purpose is an important book that puts the lie to the strange notion that without God life has no purpose. Living is great, fulfilling, and meaningful without God. Like his previous book, Godless, Life-Driven Purpose is a book that every one with an interest in spirituality, religion in political life, and how to lead a meaningful life will want to have on their shelves."
--Daniel Everett, author of Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes and Language

"Dan says he's certainly not pretending to be a Deacon of Atheism or Bishop of Freethought, but he is. In this book Deacon Dan uses good scholarship in offering convincing answers to some of the most important reasons why believers keep on believing despite the lack of sufficient evidence. Writing with the wit and storytelling of a preacher, this series of 'sermons' will definitely reach the masses. I heartily endorse it. May it produce a revival, one of reason, logic, and science."
--John W. Loftus, author of Why I Became An Atheist and The Outsider Test for Faith

From An Atheist's Point Of View
By A Customer
Dan Barker's new book takes a close look at how he has found purpose and meaning without God. While Rick Warren believes the only answer to finding purpose is to worship God, have fellowship, become Christ-like, serve others and evangelize, Dan takes a different view from the eyes of an atheist.

While he can disagree with believer's, Dan does not come across as arrogant or disrespectful as some may suspect. He gives plenty of examples to back up his beliefs and to prove his points.

Life is it's own reward, while purpose comes from within and meaning is the result of that purpose. The author also touches on morality, which he believes comes from instinct and reason and the result of how society has set up laws and principles. Chapter 4, Much Ado About is the most challenging to grasp, since it covers how "something can come from nothing".

Overall, I found this book to be ok, nothing really exciting or special since these areas have been covered in the past. It's just another author giving his views of the world, so if you are new to this subject, it can be a good starting point. So don't let the 3 star rating turn you away.

I have read one of Dan's previous books, "Godless", which I found much more enjoyable and would highly recommend.

Great Book That Accurately Defines How Secular People Live Life
By Claudia
A great book to show all individuals, despite their faith, that there is a whole group out there who finds purpose in life. Those in the secular community create their own purpose. Dan always writes with such a great balance of intelligence and humor, and it's always a pleasure reading his books. Dan is a clear writer, letting you know exactly how things are defined and makes points that he backs up very well. There are also great analogies in the book, such as the basement one (chapter 1). Atheists/agnostics/skeptics are not these angry people - life IS our own reward. There is a great difference between "purpose of life" and "purpose in life" - which Dan points out very well.

A Review of the Life Driven Purpose: How an Atheist Finds Meaning by the Freedom from Religion Foundation
By D. Mooney
From the Freedom from Religion Foundation

It seems certain that not-so-reverend (or revered) Rick Warren is no intellectual match for ex-reverend Dan Barker.

Christian Pastor Warren's best seller, Purpose Driven Life, starts with a single-sentence paragraph: "It's not about you." God planned your life, he claims, before you were born. "You don't get to choose your purpose."

Former minister Barker, now FFRF co-president, turns Warren's sad worldview right-side up in his new book, Life Driven Purpose: How an Atheist Finds Meaning (April 2015, Pitchstone). "It is about you," his book starts. "When it comes to purpose, it is about you and no one else."

Life Driven Purpose, with an eloquent foreword by philosopher Daniel C. Dennet (author of Breaking the Spell and an honorary FFRF director) is the first book by an atheist aimed at the "inspirational/motivational" bookshelves. "We atheists are truly IN-spired" Dan says, "while believers are OUT-spired. They desperately seek their marching orders from somewhere outside themselves -- a king, commander, lord or slave master -- while we nonbelievers find and create purpose and meaning within ourselves."

Inner-directed purpose is the only true purpose, Dan writes. "Asking, 'If there is no God. what is the purpose of life? is like asking, "If there is no master, whose slave will I be?"

Chapter 1, "The Good News." softly mimics the "inspirational" style of Rick Warren and Joel Osteen, but comes to the novel conclusion: The truly good news is that there is no purpose *of* life. There is purpose *in* life. Nonbelievers have lived, and are living, immensely meaningful lives as they work to solve problems and meet the challenges that confront us in the real world.

The rest of the book returns to Dan's familiar writing style. Chapter 2, "Mere Morality" replaces C.S. Lewis *Mere Christianity* with a superior. naturalistic moral philosophy. Chapter 3, "Religious Color Blindness" creatively probes the polarized mind of a fundamentalist believer.(You'll have to read it ti discover how Annie Laurie Gaylor misplaced hat sheds light on religious belief.) Chapter 4, "Much Ado About," is Dan's thoughtful answer to the question "Can something come from nothing?"

Summing it all up, the final chapter "Life is Life" circles back to "meaning" by recounting personal stories from Dan's family. Thus does it replace the elusive "meaning of life" with the very real "meaning in life."

*Life Driven Purpose flips so many religious precepts on their heads. You can see the real world much netter, Dan says, by looking through the right end of the telescope. "A supernatural additive pollutes what is pure and precious in our species. We atheists simply refuse to be cheated of the good life."

Richard Dawkins, who helped with the editing, calls *Life Driven Purpose "a lovely book"
