SHADOWS OF DEATH: Death Comes with Fury (and Dark Humor) To a Small Town South of Chicago, by Carl S. Plumer

Death has come with fury (and a bit of dark humor) to a little town south of Chicago.

A healthy patient dies without explanation. A tour bus crashes; no survivors. Electrical fires. Strange diseases. Odd, deadly accidents.

And only a group of teens know why this is happening.

On an ordinary weekend, out on a drive at night, four friends find . . .

A portal to hell

And they accidently release into the world,

An army of grim reapers

Reapers with a hatred of all humankind—"shadows" that immediately embark on

A worldwide killing spree

the likes of which has not been seen since the Black Plague. Or the Purple Plague before that.

Now, only Conner, Almira, Ricky, and Flower can save the world. So the friends must

Sacrifice themselves

In order to bring order back to a broken planet, by going

Back through the portal . . .

Back into a world of screaming darkness . . .

Back to the dominion of death . . .

But hopefully back in time for dinner

`The shadow remained an anomaly, an unexplained phenomenon. Or, simply, a trick of the eyes, a trick of the light.'
By Grady Harp
New York City author Carl S. Plumer comes to the writing of popular books with a solid background. He has advanced degrees in writing and in addition to using that training to write for literary magazines, and books DEADLY SHORT STORIES, MAD ABOUT UNDEAD YOU: A ZOMBIE APOCALYSE LOVE STORY (for which he won awards), ZOMBIE EVER AFTER, DEMON DAYS, he also taught writing, worked at a printing press, delivered newspapers, managed a bookstore - always keeping the world of words around him. Now he comes to us with SHADOWS OF DEATH and to those unfamiliar with Plumer's writing skills, be prepared for an outing you won't soon forget.

As is indicated by the titles of the works he has written, Plumer is a purveyor of tales of the undead, works of science fiction and horror. Bu the also has a gift for inventing credible characters who by chance (or by golly!) get pulled into unfathomably deep mysteries - and what is even more unusual in books of this genre, the manner in which he introduces the `dark' is offered as openers, setting a fine mood for what is to come. For example, in SHADOWS OF DEATH he defines his `shadow': We are in a hospital room and `The double-paned and sealed hospital windows kept the cold air of October at bay. Leaves fell and skittered outside along the grass and across asphalt. The moon cut through the sky a righteous ghost. The room stayed warm, heated by modern technology. And the man, in his early fifties, dozed in comfort: not too hot, not too cold. The shadow floated by again. Where did it come from? Did the moon and the curtain conspire to dance shadows around the room? The curtain barely ruffled now, almost still. Yet, the shadow moved like a phantom doctor or nurse, going about their business. But no such thing existed, in this hospital or any other, as a wraith doing good deeds. Still, the shadow remained an anomaly, an unexplained phenomenon.' Now, with Goosebumps in place, we meet the youngsters whose adventure is the core of this book. To use the author's tight synopsis, `Conner and Almira are typical teens, in love and looking toward the future. Ricky is Conner's best friend since kindergarten and the funny-guy counter-point to the athlete Conner. Flower is a friend of all three, still looking for true love after one too many dud love affairs. Life for the four high school friends was perfectly normal and perfectly safe. But that was to change forever in a single, catastrophic evening. One Saturday night, the friends are out driving, looking for fun and harmless adventure. But they find death and misery, instead. At the edge of town, just off the interstate, the friends discover a mysterious portal into a cold, dark world. They sense a terrible evil and barely escape with their lives. Back in the world they've known since childhood, something has turned horribly wrong. Neighbors, teachers, and relatives are dying -- of rare and unique diseases or strange circumstance. As their parents and best friends become the latest victims, the teens understand they must return to the dark place again to save the world.'

Plumer makes these four friends identifiably real characters and in doing so he manages to pull us into this bizarre story so well that while we are reading it all seems to make perfect (if scary) sense. That is the trait of a sci-fi horror author who succeeds and if this tale is typical of his output, he has a solid place not only with the Young Adult set, but also with all readers who enjoy escape into the unknown. Exciting Urban Fantasy
By Scott
Are you looking for a great fantasy novel with a sense of danger and a great cast of characters, if you are, then Shadows of Death by Carl Plumer is right up your alley. Shadows of Death is an urban fantasy romance novel that features “grim reaper” characters as the villain and a group of high school students as the heroes.

Our protagonists are Connor, the athlete. His girlfriend Almira. Connor’s best friend and funny guy Ricky Martin. And Almira’s best friend Flower. The girls find a portal into what they believe is hell one afternoon and decide that they have to go back but need some backup in order to make it safe. For that they need the boys. They quickly realize the danger and escape only to realize that they only chance for the worlds survival is if they return.

I really enjoyed the terrified feeling that I got when thinking about what would happen if the grim reaper could simply kill anyone they wanted for any reason. How would it be if there were a bunch of crazed serial killers that we couldn’t see, feel, or identify? This was a great read and I can’t wait to pick up more of Plumer’s work.

Will be looking for more from Plumer!
By Chelsey McQuitty
It’s not too often that a book can spook me, but the language and descriptors used as the teens crossed the portal really got me. This book was well thought out and written, which made it fast and enjoyable to read. I kinda wished I’d picked it up a month ago for Halloween though.
The friend dynamic in this book is pretty awesome. I loved how each of the teens were written with distinct personality and you got to know them pretty well. It sort of took me back to my high school days, apart from the whole releasing death ordeal.
The plot is pretty original and will keep you engrossed if you like suspense. I was hooked from page one and have already passed it on to a friend who is in love with it. I’d recommend this to anyone that loves young adult fiction as well as sci-fi and suspense. It’s great for leisure reading on the weekend especially!
